Lamp oil

Ive had a couple of hurricane lanterns for afew years but find paying £7-£8 for a liter of lamp oil pretty expensive, apart from fleabay and about as amazon as a concrete jungle, anyone know where a cheaper source may be found?

Won't help you unless you live in SE London but I get mine from my local hardware store for about the same price as pseudonym. You might have a similar store nearby but didn't think to look in for lamp oil: it's the kind that has cheap, brightly coloured plastic bowls, buckets, brooms and other similar items on the pavement outside. Usually run by Asians for Asians. Mine has a gazillion differently sized food-grade plastic tubs which are fantastic for storage, and tucked away at the back a little shelf with standard lamp oil, citronella lamp oil, paraffin, methylated spirits, fire-lighters, briquettes and Chinese-made hurricane lamps. It's a cornucopia of delight, wandering round its tightly packed aisles!

We have several Victorian oil lamps as a backup source of lighting. I use ordinary paraffin in them which works perfectly well. OK, it's probably slightly more smoky than lamp oil but much cheaper!

If its smokey then you need to trim your wick.

What most forget is that wick lamps (and to a lesser extent mantle lamps) need regular adjustment.
When I go away to gatherings I end up having to sort my friends lamps out for them, the commonest problem is the glass gets dirty so the light dims, so somebody turns the lamp up which then smokes and starts to soot up the glass. So the light dims , so they turn the lamp up making more soot.......And they wonder why the glass ends up black inside and the wick is nearly burnt away
