MOD survival knife makeover

Post by MJ. »

just received one of these "lumps" today a bog standard mod survival knife and plan on transforming it into something better with a full regrind/reprofile, new scales and a new kydex sheath!

bottom knife is one of my other 6" bladed profiles just for scale

managed to get the scales off easily with a 6mm drill into the rivets, the welds on the guard were ground off to remove it. heres the profile so far, little off the top to give a smooth curved spine followed by some reshaped of the tang. getting late to grind the bevels but will have a go tomorrow

here it is so far.... to be honest with only half an inch difference in blade length i prefer my "raven" profile. the handle on the MOD knife is extremely long. not sure what to think?...

Looking good brother! I'm getting slightly jealous, envious and pangs of guilt for trading mine years ago. I might have to reinvest soonest....

this one will be going cheap, bit of a learning curve but i have another one ordered to work on. its significantly lighter and takes a super edge now but think i could have done things a little better... maybe went too far with the bevel grinds? and could have left a little more meat on the handle?...

Interesting post. I have a Boker Magnum that also needs a serious reprofile on the blade, this has given me an idea of how much to take back. I've been too cautious hitherto, getting a good edge but not one that lasts.

this is why i test every blade... both mod survival knifes dated 1993 with very similar grinds albeit 1 degree, blade kept cool right through stock removal and i get this within the first few chops on some 4 inch live ash... blade tempered way to soft one the first one

the other one was put through its paces and seems fine with good heat treat and tempering..
