I managed to handle one a few days back (Shrewsbury indoor market, £10)

Its quite a big bag for its class (military standard issue), and you should be able to shove a lot of soft bulky stuff (like sleeping bags) into it.

I wouldn't want to haul weight in it (no frame and basic straps), but as a bush-bag, GHB or three-season BoB its C,R&R. Win, a small win.... But still a win.

I once assembled a BoB on a budget ($100, or £65 at that time) for a compatition on another site, I wish I'd of known of this bag then.

I must admit that does look a little smaller capacity then advertised. You may be right in thinking about a 50 litre, as wulfshead said at the beginning of this post his 60 litres does the job for a weekend away for him... and likewise I have a 65 litre that sorts me out for a 3-4 day weekend away. Just depends on what you intend on packing for your needs really.

On the upside though that polish pack does look like it will make a nice day bag for hill walking just to carry some essentials and some emergency gear in case you get caught out.

are you guys planning on using these as a bug out bag?.i find this an interesting idea.i live in west cumbria one of the least populated and wildest places in the uk.however i cant walk over the mountains or anyware else for more than 2/3 hours at best without comming across human habitation.
also after bugging out surviving off the land up here would be hard.im not being funny.but where are you gonna bug out to?.if you live near a town or city will the surrounding countryside not be filled with the escaping masses.i live in the countryside and food is not easy to catch or kill.( berries and mushrooms no worries, when in season).you cannot think your the only one with the idea of getting out?.i would like to hear a discussion on this.

Hi bobbydog (love the name!). As for discussing it, believe me, once you look around on the forum, you'll be tripping over discussions like that. Yep, if the cities/towns get bad, I think people might just start to trek, without any clear idea of where they're trekking *to*.

Well it looks like I have my bag situation sorted out.

I just won a Berghaus AB System Backpack on eBay For £1.00 plus £12.95 shipping. It's an older model but in very good condition for it's age; circa 1980 or so. It's medium sized so I'm reckoning on 45L and being expandable to 65L or so according the seller.

As it's in Harrogate I may even take a ride over there an collect in person.

Crap! looks like I spoke too soon. Seller mailed me to say it has been damaged and no longer available.

Back to the drawing board then. Still looking for something suitable. The military Patrol Packs still look like a very viable option.

Had the sale finished?
Did they give you the option of backing out or did they just tell you that you can't have it?

I'm a nasty minded little bleeder and I'm wondering if matey decided they aren't going to let it go for a quid.

Sale had finished. Seller mailed me to say that it was being used this weekend and had gotten damaged so it was no longer available. Wasn't even given the option of having and fixing whatever damage had happened.

I do think the same as yourself, the seller doesn't want to let it go so cheap.

Nevermind, the seller loses as I no longer want the other item from the seller. I'll put my money into anothe bag when i find one suitable.

Yes mate that stinks of someone backing out - tell him you'll have it anyway then pick it up in person (saving the postage fees) and worst case you will have spent a quid on a damaged (but probably repairable) pack. Otherwise report him to ebay for unsportsmanlike behaviour
