Another idea is to use concrete gravel boards and cut up corner posts. Dearer as you have to buy them unlike Bloggs the builders bags but better looking and pretty much maintenance free and will last almost forever.

Yep, that's a good idea. A scaffold board or gravel board will give you an extra 5-6 inches of depth. More than adequate. I grow potatoes in 8 inches of chalky silt up here in the North Downs.

I'd never heard of concrete gravel boards. You are supposed to have those under a wooden fence?

Yes they're the ones and the corner posts , again in concrete , are the ones with slots set into adjoining faces to allow a fence to turn through 90* .
