New home, new preps.

Post by socks90 »

So I've just bought a house with my girlfriend in area 2 and now I don't know what long term preps to do! I've got her on board with getting a multi fuel burner with hot plates in the living room on the premise it will add character to the house. but general preps..now what?
many thanks!

Learn skills, read books, gather knowledge, and prep for the smaller more likely events -power cuts, snowed in,cash machines fail etc .Establish a garden if you have one.Learn where your shut offs for gas, water and electric are,and learn the local area, are all good bets in my opinion.

Plan for financial security:
If neither of you can work for six months, how will you keep the house?
Is the morgage in you name, hers or both of yours? If its only one of you, what happens to the other one should the morgage holder die ? (this is a "sort your will out" job)
Life insurance is a great way to safeguard yourselves, if you go with a series of short policies (the kind that last a decade or so and pay out if you don't die) its also a good way to save money.

Plan Storage

Plan Garden

Work out what the three most likely Zombies are for your new location, Plan accordingly

And as Waterbaby says, learn your shut-offs

see I had never thought about if I couldn't work fot 6 months and paying the mortgage! ill look in to life insurance as I'm a self employed carpenter, I suppose that likelihood is greater than my girlfriend's office job! also the shutoffs! I'm glad I posted this now because these are just general sensible things Ive never had to think of before!

I've started the old 'long life foods' prep already so I guess thats something. many thanks guys! any other ideas would be much appreciated so I can sort out a huge 'to do' list

Being self employed, I personally have been there, so food storage is essential as it will allow you to live off your stores and dedicate what money you have to paying bills and mortgage, should either of you be unable to work. Store what you eat and eat what you store. Try the LTS Food before you commit to it. I do not like the Mountain House porridge for example so would not store it.

I also second ForgeCorvus'es remarks.

OK, if you're self employed also think about insurance for accident and injury.... If you can't work you'll have zero income otherwise (unlike wage-slaves like me :|), most insurers will have policies designed for S-E tradesmen.

Both of you should have life insurance, after all RTA's can happen to anyone.

My mentioning Wills has reminded me that I need to get mine in order
