Was looking for bolt cutters for my BOB, when I had an epiphany. Cutters weigh several kilos, and are rather bulky, where as lock picks are small light and discreet.
Having experience picking locks in my school days, I decided to revisit it.
Under uk laws, carrying picks is a grey area. But, I always carry a case of locks with my picks, and hoping to argue its my hobby. Which it is. I certainly dont advocate breaking and entering, but in a PAW I think its a skill worth having.
A simple set of picks can be had for under 30 quid. Or you can make your own from the steel inside wind screen wiper blades. I can recommend madbobs lockpicks, as well made and easy to use. Sets can be found online, but beware. Uk an euro locks are smaller than American locks. im concentrating on cylinder locks an padlocks as they are most common.
Can post more information if people are interested,

Hi Mongpig,
Very interesting post! I've just browsed the 'Mad bobs' website and gotta say I'm tempted, Thinking as a hobby/pass time that would yield very obvious benefits in SHTF!
Thanks for that

DEFINITION – LEGAL: GOING EQUIPPED FOR STEALING, ETC. THEFT ACT 1968 SEC 25.
“A person shall be guilty of an offence, if, when not at his place of abode, he has with him any article for use in the course of or in connection with any burglary or theft.“
Nothing grey about that, you get stopped and searched you will most probably be nicked, unless you are an accredited Locksmith.

I've got a set, yet to get much practice in with decent locks but can get past a couple of two pin ones and a three pin I've got.
You do have to question your ability to pick a lock in a time critical situation though, given 15 seconds, there's a big dog running up behind you and you need to get into a building, I'll choose the bolt cutters anyday

Re: lock picking in PAW.
I'd not carry anything like that after a thing which happened to us a few years back.
Now I fully accept that we need a police force but I personally don't like everything that the job seems to come with.
We took on a lad who carried the hod for us as an trainee bricklayer. We knew a few years earlier he got nicked a couple of times for stealing cars.
OK, none of us are perfect we thought and gave him a chance as he seemed a very decent lad to us.
Now lots of brickies keep their tools in a bucket and it comes to pass that bits of bricks or blocks will end up in the bucket.
Come home time there is very little thought about cleaning out golf ball size bits of rubble because it's time to get the hell off the site, happy time.
Now this lad was walking home with a bucket full of tools which included a club hammer, claw hammer and various heavy bolsters.
He was stopped and arrested for going equipped to steal.
When he went to court it was not the multitude of tools that was offered by the police as the means to break into a car/house window but the golf ball size bits of concrete blocks in his bucket. The police said they were for throwing through a window to gain access.
Now I and every other person who heard this story said any judge should have thrown the case out.
The judge found the lad guilty and he got a large fine and another smear on his record.
That story has stuck in my mind for 15 years and as such I'd never risk carrying anything that gives the police the chance of a bent conviction.
