Re: The best defence
I think the best form of defence is to "keep quiet about what you are doing" no equipment needed for that.
It alo depends what you have in mind as what you need to defend yourself from?

i live in the effective centre of 400,000 people... so i have my selection of air rifles, which have moderate power, but more importantly look the piece, which i'm hoping if anything did hit the fan, just the look of them would divert any hostility...

Defensive capabilities -- this has to be a very important consideration if one is thinking in terms of the SHTF big-time. Whatever food and provisions you have acquired to get you through difficult times could well be taken/stolen from you by desperate gangs of starving people if there is societal collapse.
Scoobie is of course right, all such defensive preparations MUST at all times be legal.
I also fully agree with gnole; keeping your preparations quiet, and keeping a very low profile if things do kick off are very good tactics. Avoiding being seen is a much better option than having to fight. That may not be sufficient to get you through all situations though. You must be prepared to defend what is yours if you are to survive.
Having been involved in martial arts for over thirty five years (yes, I know, that makes me quite old!!) I now realize the knowledge and skills I have gained over that time would serve me in good stead if TSHTF.
Obviously I'm not suggesting this as a route that everyone else either could or should follow, but there are certain self defense / martial skills people can acquire with a bit of tuition and practice which might just give them the edge in difficult or violent situations.
**Any weapons used in martial arts/self defense training have to be fully legal**

i like your thinking, I myself am not the biggest or strongest buck! I'm relying on my wit and brain to get me through alot, and my physical situation gets better by the day... I think when it comes to defence alot is mental rather than physical.
