Greetings from the South West!

Post by MrJere »

Hi UK-Preppers!

Been lurking for a couple of days and what was initially a passing interest in the prepping mentality, threatens to become a full blown hobby (is that even the right word? Obsession might give the wrong impression!). I'm a 20something IT guy currently living in Bristol aboard a 1956 wooden coastal motor cruiser (a work in progress, slowly getting there!) with interests in electrical repair, carpentry and home brewing. Currently I'll be the first to admit that I'm massively under prepared for anything but I hope over the coming months to put together some preps that would cover me in the event that I need to navigate somewhere a little bit quieter. Look forward to talking to some like minded individuals!

Cheers
Jere

Welcome Jere,
I remember listening to an old boat owner when I was helping my friend refit his early 1960's East German Folk Boat after he bought it.
The old guy said "Do you know the best way to end up with half a million pounds by owning a wooden boat !", to which we replied with interest "no".
He then took a serious look at us and laughing as he spoke said "begin with a million pounds !!"

Over the next 5 years I watched my mate pump money at his boat hand-over-fist and I knew the old bloke was dead right in what he said.
My mate now has a 34 foot GRP boat which is slightly less demanding.

Again, welcome and enjoy the forum.

Oooo boy, believe me I know  If I only had an old guy to advise me when I bought it, I would have gone for fiberglass or steel instead! Still, it got a wonderful history and over the course of the last 2/3 years I've grown to love it in all its ugly glory.

The usual remarks I get are along the lines of 'Did you paint it blue so you don't notice the water coming in?'

Thank you for the warm welcome Wulfshead and pseudonym :)

Welcome from me too! A wooden boat ... oh my word! Magical! And yes, I can imagine its a money pit ... but as long as it keeps out the water, its a prep in itself! :)

Welcome. How lucky are you!! Being a Piscean I love the water and boats. I'd like to know how you generate your electricity. I've always thought if I was lucky enough to live on a boat then I'd try and go down the Hydro route, would this be possible.?

Thanks again for the welcome :)
In terms of hydro power when moored, I'd imagine that would be possible if the area has enough water current to spin your turbine but definitely more than possible while cruising, I believe racing yachts have these to supliment power. I'm looking into solar or wind however because Bristol is a tide locked harbour (very little water movement other than wake tbh) so hydro would only benefit me while cruising
