But don't you store in original packaging? So what would you store rice in after you froze etc..Decaff wrote:I do, it gets double ziplocked and into the freezer, then I will decant when back at room temperature into my long term storage containersitslee wrote:Does anyone freeze dried goods in the original packaging?
Re: keeping food in original packaging?
After freezing I store in the huge clip top kilner jars with oxy absorbers, one in the bottom and one one the top. Flour goes into the kilner jars with the screw band and ring system and one oxy absorber pushed into the flour which will then seal the jar airtight and the lid pops down. Packs of bread mixes I keep in original packaging and after freezing they go into air tight lock n lock boxes still in the zip lock bags. Sugar goes into clip top DONT PUT OXY ABSORBER IN SUGAR or it will turn into one solid lump
salt I keep in the plastic tubs it comes in or double bag if its in a plastic bag just in case it gets torn.
I only store plain flour (all purpose) too as you can add baking powder and bicarb of soda to make into self raising but you can't make SR flour into plain (all purpose) flour. Hope this makes sense!
I do go overboard with it as the thought of creatures in my food is just ick to me. Everyone finds the preferred way of storing so go with what makes sense to you but I would always advise the freezing of dry goods first.

Btw im using 8kg buckets which are just a nice size. I can fit about 7kg of bags in this tub, but tempted to insert a oxy tab but the lid does not go air tight just clips closed.
I use the below buckets which I get from a local cake icing place.

Great buckets, dark too which is good to keep the light out.
Mind you a full bucket of vanilla whip over rice any day .... Yummy!!!!

I can fit 8 I think on a single shelf in my cupboard which is ideal. And yes when I get them they need a washing out and the icing looks good haha
Re: keeping food in original packaging?
Dark enough to keep the light out but I would still store them out of sunlight. I've had dark coloured buckets in the past , not used for food , so not stored always in a dark place and have found the sunlight degrades the plastic with the tops splitting first and the bucket itself becoming brittle. Takes a few years but still something to bear in mind.Decaff wrote:Great buckets, dark too which is good to keep the light out.
