New Poor Prepper?

Post by TinaWillow »

Hi :) Your advice would be appreciated please.

Having worked all my life I was hospitalised with double pneumonia 2 years ago & it messed up my life big time: Had to give up work, sign on benefits for first time in my life and learned very very fast that the system I'd paid into doesn't really want to pay me anything back! Taught me a timely lesson though - blessing in disguise maybe :) I've learned to grow my own veg, waste nothing, cook everything from scratch, maximise freebies like heat from the sun, recycle everything (for my own use not council bins) and can DIY pretty much everything I used to buy in stores from soap to contact lens' solution.

I'm looking for work again now but won't forget what I've learned, including how tenuous our imagined 'security' is.

Living on 'the other side' has confirmed what I already suspected: Our Govt is indifferent & untrustworthy, our democracy is a façade, world leaders have agendas that don't consider, let alone include us and all of us are, at best, collateral damage. We're on our own.

So, here's my problem :)

1.) I have 5 kids, all 20-somethings, all lovely, employed, self sufficient & living in different parts of UK. Being 20-somethings they still believe they'll live forever and everything in life can be taken at face value. Only the youngest, who's so deep he's verging on psychotic, even questions what's happening in the world. The other 4 think I'm nuts. But, of course, I love 'em all (even the ones who irritate the hell out of me) and can't consider prepping without including space for them. So that's 6 of us.

2.) I haven't been able to find a job yet so I'm living somewhere beneath the breadline: I can't invest £thousands into prepping. I can probably invest approx. 50p a week - and that'll mean missing a meal! <has another little whinge about the approx. £250K she's paid in bloody tax in her bloody life> Could you advise what's the most important stuff to get please?

3.) I've got £30 credit on Amazon so could buy a couple of books/guides but dunno which ones are best ........... I've looked and there's loads! Any recommendations please?

4.) I live in a 2nd floor flat (just a small block of 8), in a rural village. Given the building design & location, I think that's probably quite a good place to be if prepping ever needed? Do you think it sounds OK or should I still look for a bolthole?

If you've read all the way though all that, thank you :) If you can help me with any of it, thank you even more!

If 50p represents a meal, I wouldn't spend your £30 on books - all the information contained in books can be obtained free of charge via forums and other websites.

Use the £30 for something that is more useful to you, even if its groceries or other household items.

Thank you Devonian :) Unfortunately it's stuck on Amazon but I'll hold fire on your advice - makes sense - maybe prepper tools or supplies a better way to spend it x

Great link thank you Hamra :) I can d/l the book for £2 - great! Plus there's a link to their website with additional advice, plus it links to lots of equally useful books. I'd also like to continue what I've been doing and live the style now - part necessity, part prepping, part the more I do it the more happy & content I am - so it really is exactly what I need in all sorts of ways. Will keep me out of trouble for weeks! Thanks again :) x

I would ask friends if they wanted to use the voucher and give you the cash to buy food with, rice, dried beans/lentils tinned tomatoes and dried veg, stock cubes as a start.

£30 worth of rice and dried kidney beans will keep you fed for a long time. Plus they will keep forever. The diet might be boring, yet like I said it will keep you going.
I don't do politics or religion. Seen to many people die because of these.

I post to contribute so take as you see fit. My way is not the only way.

Cheers

You grow...you make.. you mend.

But, what do you not have, that you cannot improvise?
