My first Carry

Post by Prep4War »

Hi to all, this is my first post on here and thought I'd start with my basic carry just so you all get to know the sort of bloke I am.

Snugpak response bag.

Shelter - Waterproof poncho
Paracord
2 x tent pegs
5 x elastic bands (nice thick one)
Water - 300ml bottle
30 x puritabs
Filtration straw
Food - 10 x race tabs (training sups - protein / glucose)
Basic fishing kit (everything minus rod/reel)
3 x snare lines
Warmth - fire starter /tinder (altoids tin)
Emergency blanket
Weapons - extendable baton
Skeleton fixed blade
Electronics - handheld gps
Iridium phone
First aid - wound closure strips
2 x small bandages (eye patch ones)
It is rammed full but it works
Apart from my Edc this is pretty much it. I've got a jacket packed
My BOV will be my next post once I've bought my new genny

So... What's people opinions - my main concern was warmth

It's certainly a lot more than I regularly carry on my person but then we all have differing circumstances and approaches. You do seem to be covering most likely problems that you are likely to come up against . There may be some concern with the extendable baton , carrying a concealed weapon might get you into trouble as could the fixed blade knife. There are several topics covering knives and weapons on here that you may wish to read.
Concerning your main concern is warmth I'd say you could do with a metallic container , mess tin , crusader cup , or something along those lines to enable you to heat up drinks.

Yeah more then I carry too, but then I don't go very far and carrying weapons would not be clever where I go on foot ( usually in and around the city center shops  ) and very close to home, as for much of the other stuff I'd have to ask ( as I am being nosey and to get my head around just what is sensible to cart about all the time) I assume what people carry (Not just you) is tailored somewhat toward their activities and likely needs, I'm 5 minutes walk from Plymouth city center with an Aldi and Lidl also within 10 minutes walk, most of my activity outside the home is shopping type chores and when I'm off on pleasure activities then the needs of the day are catered for like your kit, first aid, food, drink, shelter and communication, paper maps and the car's GPS.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

Ahah, I missed the non-recommended items in the list - I was more interested in how all that fits in a snugpak and how much it weighs when loaded.

Where are you? As others have said the extendable baton and the fixed blade are both offensive weapons in the UK. If you're elsewhere in the world then it might be all above board, but that's the immediate thing that stands out.

As for the rest, depends what you're prepping for really. How often are you likely to get caught out in the wilds with only your mini fishing kit to survive?
Do you travel a lot, hence the iridium phone? I have one and they're expensive bits of kit to have unless you travel to the back of beyond regularly.

Lastly, I'd focus more on ramping up the first aid kit a little bit, you have lots of backwoods survival kit but nothing to deal with an infection or a serious injury, or even basic pain meds for that matter.

Far point from everyone - really appreciate all the concern and yes the "weapons are gone now"
As for the iridium phone I'm in a lot of places that mobiles don't work.
As fr first aid Ibe had a lot of time to perfect my flora fauna repertoire.
A Boiling vessel - schoolboy error how did I miss is. I have a small metal cup normal in my hand full of brew so probably forgot to mention it.
Thanks again to you all.
As for location apart from saying I'm SW I'm not saying much else - nothing personal - security reasons.

Best thing to do is consider the most likely scenarios that could happen to you, and where.

For instance, if you cut your leg open badly how are you going to stem the bleeding? A triangular bandage or a large bandage with wadding pad. Better still a shemagh will serve many purposes such as this (warmth, water filtering, extra carrying etc).

Do you travel to unfamiliar places? If so, and even if you are good with directions, a compass is a must.

The list goes on...........
My prepping consists of bugging out by bicycle so any comments are likely to be based on that scenario.

I meant country, but yeah if you're in the UK you've done yourself a favour by de-escalating the arsenal a bit.

In terms of first aid kit, just supplement what you have with the basics. No point lugging around a full medic's kit if you don't know how to use it, but similarly carry enough to deal with the more serious problems that can arise. As a basic kit, I'd advise you have;

Antiseptic cream
Ibuprofen
Imodium - Nothing like crapping yourself to death to embarrass you
Antihistamine
Vaseline
Tweezers
Scalpel blade
Plaster strip and bandages & safety pins
Israeli bandage - these are awesome

If you want to, you could add some QuickClot and a Chest Seal, but now we're talking major trauma which isn't something you can walk off.

Plus you can now ditch your fishing kit, because you have safety pins and you can strip some of that paracord down for fishing line. Hurrah.
