Hi,
As I've said previously, my main prep is for power cuts (living in an all electric flat!). However one of my new year resolutions is to be more prepared for things, which is vague enough that I can convince myself I'm definitely fulfilling it throughout the year! As a part of this I want to put together a small keyring EDC, as I always have my keys with me no matter where I am. I don't want this to be too bulky as I'll be carrying it on my person everyday. I was wondering what you guys have on your keyrings and whether you can recommend any essentials for mine?
So far I have the following:
Car key
House key
Door fob
Attack alarm with torch ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Police-Approved ... larm+torch )
Cat keyring ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PXOJ1D0/r ... on+keyring )
Pocket mask ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/FACE-SHIELD-RIN ... ace+shield )
To many of you the attack alarm/torch and cat keyring may not seem essential, however I'm a petite female and have just been rotated to a new post in my job which will mean I'll be travelling alone between different sites at night (by car but I'll obviously need to get in and out!), and I want to feel as safe as possible.
I'm also thinking of adding a Victorinox Classic SAK and a small pouch (about the same size as the pocket mask) that I can fill with useful things such as plasters, few medicines, safety pins etc. What do you guys think?
Happy new year!

Re: Keyring EDC
Hello.
Well, on my keyring I have a
Fenix E05 aaa torch,
a Leatherman Squirt multi tool (a bit heftier than a Classic but has some very usable pliers on it,)
a paracord dangler (paracord is amazing, comes in handy for all sorts of things, from replacing a snapped shoelace to securing a lighting rig.)
And last but not least a cash stash (aluminium capsule with a £20 note in there,) which has saved my bacon gawd knows how many times!
That pretty much covers everything for me in an urban environment,i reckon..

Re: Keyring EDC
On my main house keys I have keys, I carry around something else with a flint and magnesium block which I add to with a small carrabiner according to what I am doing, and then the car keys, I find they get cluttered enough with just keys, I want one or two of those little pocket pouches though for traveling light.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: Keyring EDC
Good grief woman, you're a woman. That gives you licence to carry a bag of any size and description and simply call it a handbag.
There must be loads of blokes that wish they could do the same.
Sorry, that doesn't help much The only tool I carry on my car keys is a Gerber Clutch.

My prepping consists of bugging out by bicycle so any comments are likely to be based on that scenario.

Re: Keyring EDC
The only thing I have on my keyring are my house keys and a Leatherman CS Style as a fob (it also serves as my street legal EDC pocket knife)
However, other things I carry in my pockets (and transfer from one set of clothes to another) are:
Torch (you got one already)
Pen (mines a 'Space pen' now, but any folding or telescopic inkstick you can come up with will do)
Clipper Lighter (you can buy holders for them to attach them on a keyring or necklace, look in New-Age shops or just get a keyring lighter )
A 'Stash-fob' like Eddy mentioned would be useful (available in a range of sizes from tiny ones you can just get a couple of tablets or a tightly folded bank note in, up to massive ones that just about fit in my fist..........)

Here's mine;
That's a keysmart with two keys and an 8Gb Sandisk Cruzer, a Fenix E01, a front door key, a gerber shard, an Inova UV torch and a cigar punch.
I also always carry a Spyderco UKPK knife (Uk legal and replaced my Boker XS), a mini moleskin notebook, a bic lighter and a titanium space pen in my pockets.

The cat keyring would be classed as a weapon and if you did use it on anyone you would be liable for arrest for assault in the UK, unfortunately.
However if you study a bit of kubotan technique then you can use your keyring as a close range self-defence weapon very easily, with potentially fewer awkward questions afterwards ("I just lashed out with whatever was in my hands, officer. I'm really sorry I took his eye out....")

Re: Keyring EDC
Thanks everyone, you all have some really good ideas! I really like the idea of a little stash pod for cash and maybe a couple other little bits, so I'll be getting one of those.
Lol! That's the trouble Hoipoloi, being the fickle woman I am I have multiple handbags in different sizes for a whole variety of occasions. I do keep a small bag of stuff (mainly medicines and first aid stuff) that I transfer between bags, but there are times when I forget as I switch bags so often. I do plan to beef this up a little and try harder to remember it, but my keys are a constant that are with me all the time so to me it makes sense to improve their prep-worthiness.Hoipoloi wrote:Good grief woman, you're a woman. Featherstick do you mean I could use the key itself as a defence tool? I'll look up kubotan technique. I did see lots of kubotans when looking for some kind of defence tool and it seems lots of people carry them (but I think probably that's mainly in America). I chose that particular cat keyring because it looks so cat-like that it's quite inconspicuous, and also because it's plastic not metal, which I thought may make it more acceptable. It seems strange to me that it's legal to carry a SAK but not a plastic keyring with sharp ears, although I guess the sharp bits are less easily accessible, you'd have a harder time explaining 'I'm sorry officer, when I was attacked I just asked the assailant to wait a moment while I took out my blade and then accidentally took his eye out with it...'featherstick wrote:The cat keyring would be classed as a weapon and if you did use it on anyone you would be liable for arrest for assault in the UK, unfortunately.

Spiked Kubotan are now a specified offensive weapon. Standard Kubotan are also an offensive weapon and there is now case law to back this. No difference here between a 6" Kubotan and a 12" knife!
Anything carried that is designed or marketed as a weapon is likely to get you into hot water. (Tactical pens for instance)
A SAK or other UK legal penknife is a tool. If you use a SAK or a tea spoon as an improvised weapon in the UK it will be classed as a higher level of assault should it come to court. However genuine self defence, particularly now in your own home is an effective legal defence and it's unlikely the CPS would press a prosecution for someone in fear of their life in their own home.
The case of Tony Martin was slightly different as he had set man traps, held an illegal firearm and shot his assailants in the back as they were fleeing and no longer posed a threat. There are other cases where an intruder chased beyond the threshold has seen the homeowner prosecuted.
