Let us know how you go with it mate, are you marinading the meat first or what ? I'm wanting to give this a go and seeing as how Her Majesty is a veggie I can make it as spicy as I like.aldhelm wrote:I know that feeling so well lol, I too got one for Crimbo and so far I've only done meat 2 lots of pork jerky and one lot of beef, she really liked the beef so she's pushing me to do some more, but I've got to do some jerk chicken firstMrs Deeps is quite into it, she still mocks me for my torches and stuff but she's starting to get with the programme a wee bit.
What are you dehydrating?

I marinaded the beef for 24 hrs but read some where that it was best to wipe it off before putting it in the dehydrator, and rely on what had been absorbed by the meat, I ended up with something tasting more like biltong than jerky. The pork I used Chinese style cubes from Aldi I think it was that turned out a lot better but I over did it trying to get the thicker ones right.
The chicken I started marinading at around lunch time yesterday and I have just put it in now (with out wiping), I'll check it tomorrow morning.

This is the one I'm using, I only got it to experiment with, while it's OK and does the job I'm not convinced I've put it together right. It says that the trays stack both ways round but mine doesn't seem to. I guess it could always be me being thick though. Whatever the chicken smells good every time I go into the kitchen

That looks fantastic, that might be her 'joke' birthday present. As for the dehydrator, I'm not sure what brand it is but its pretty basic, 5 trays and a dicky timer/temp setter. I've got nothing to compare it to but I've been pretty happy with the results so far. I've tried another batch of bananas, cherries and carrots, they're still going so I'll check tomorrow and see how I go. There's plenty on Amazon for 20 to 30 quid worth a punt at that price. I'm enjoying building my scran preps, I used to buy dried veg to take away with me but now I can have a bash at making my own 'ready meals' using stock cubes, noodles and dried veg. I'll be giving chicken a go soon so I'll be adding that to my 'council house' MRE's. I'll let you know how I get on, probably taste like crap but chilli and garlic can work wonders.ForgeCorvus wrote:Deeps: Re Camo bandanas, break her in gently![]()

Re: What are you dehydrating?
OK so now I've got two bags of chicken bbq and chicken jerk crisps, yep I over did it again, the flavour is fine but I'm going to start the next load overnight then check it in the morning rather than starting it during the day and letting it run overnight.

Just peeled, chopped and blanched 4 kilos of onions, half for the freezer and the other half are on the dehydrator. Trouble is the smell... I want to eat hot dogs, French onion soup and anything else you have tons of onions in or on
That's the last of the veg Mr D got for me last week all done and away into storage. Bargain price for everything (carrots, peppers and onions) £3!!!!

Going to do apple rings today and a few more peppers.
Tried out the dehydrated onions, celery, carrots, tomato powder and mushrooms in a beef stew yesterday and they were fine! Mr D kept saying "ooh that's not going to work you know...." Such a pessimist but he has been well and truly silenced now

Have been doing nettles picked from the garden for a simple nettle tea.
