So you'll avoid a full fat dried milk (not common in dried milk) because you don't like Nestle? I bet you'd be more than happy to use it if things go breasts up ;)

Bit of a daft statement there grenfell, if and when it goes breasts up and your staring into some insipid cup of tea or coffee... you'll perhaps look back from you high horse and say to yourself...bugger :D

Maybe so , but in the event of some sort of economic breakdown I'll probably be able to obtain it without my money going to nestle, until then I prefer not to see my money going to the likes of them . It is possible to prep and have ethics I believe.

I quite agree Grenfell ethical prepping is where its at. There is nothing wrong with Marvel have used it for years, I am not a snob about my preps

I know a lot don't like the taste, but I got to like it years back when I had no fridge, but Long Life milk has a "Best Before" of 6 months and after watching a program the other day http://www.theargus.co.uk/news/11730147 ... ood_waste/ about usedby/sell by dates it could be good for lots longer.............

Buy wholefoods online sell skimmed and whole milk up to 25kg sized bags http://www.buywholefoodsonline.co.uk/milk-powder. I bought a 5kg bag of whole milk a few months ago, tastes fine (will never taste like fresh milk tho) and isn't clumping yet. I bought the whole milk because I believe you can make cheese with it (!), which is a nice little experiment to try. I've successfully made cream of mushroom soup using this milk - just make it a little thicker than usual, and its great for making up batches of instant hot chocolate for £s less than shop-bought.

Its also cheaper than Nido.

One point to make is that its probably a good idea to invest in a blender for making the milk with, I use a hand blender and make up just enough as I need when I need it in a plastic beaker. Stirring with a spoon isn't quite enough for it to dissolve properly.

Well I do apologise if I've upset or insulted anyone , I can only say that wasn't my intention and certainly didn't want anyone to leave. I prefer not to use nestle just as I prefer free range eggs . There are several other things I could add but I'll defer to itsy's wish and leave it.
Oh and yes unsure was right I was referring to bartering or even in the early stages buying with cash in the knowledge that cash probably won't leave the shop keepers pocket or at least not to a faceless corporation .

Back on topic , as tansaffl says powdered milk can be good past the date. I had a jar that was well out of date ( a couple of years to be honest  ) which I used a while ago. Still edible although it didn't seem to colour the tea as much as one would think and it seemed to separate a bit more easily .
