Candles

Post by Hoipoloi »

I found this in my garage today. I bought it a couple of decades ago so can't remember where or much it cost but I've not seen anything similar since.

I like candles which is why I bought one of these that takes tea light candles. It gives off a decent amount of heat as well, enough to warm your hands by anyway.

Fantastic!! I love the tall tin and as it clearly states its purpose all round the outside will be easy to grab in an emergency. The tea light holder is brilliant, a few of them hanging safely will give a reasonable amount of light, as these still available to buy?? I have a couple of glass bottle tea light holders on chains but yours is far more practical and compact.

The lantern is made by UCO and is intended for camping. It's shown in my pic extended but it closes up to protect the glass 'lens'. It hold a spare tea light in the base as well as the one in the lantern itself. (It also takes the slightly taller tea light candles)
Here's one on Amazon, a bit pricey though, maybe cheaper elsewhere:

UCO makes a taller, narrower version but that takes their own sized candles and I thought the tea light job would be better as the candles are cheaper and widely available.

I like the tin, a brief poke on ebay turns up three lots exactly like it and a few simular but with things like Garfield and 'Life Savers' (which I think are American 'Refreshers') on them.
Hiding in plain sight, after all its Retro chic init ?

Ones like this will set you back about twenty notes.

The only addition I'd make would be to put some matches in the tin too.

I also found this, the jar costs about four quid...... Pity the shipping is over fifteen :x

Thanks very much for the links everyone :D I've added to my wish list for later this month purchasing. Found a place where they are £13.45 but they won't post them for some reason and Taunton is a bit for me to click and collect :? I've emailed them to find out why so hopefully a reply will be swift!

How hard can it be to make an 'Emergency Candles' tin?
One with a lid/base to hold a candle and containing matches or a Bic lighter.
I might have a go at this when the weather warms up a bit :)

You can buy those tins cheaply in most homeware shops. A large empty tea light foil tray screwed to the lid and ta-dah! Also for opsec you can get in nice colours to be hidden in plain sight. ;)

How about a oil candle? Called a canoil, they burn kerosene. I got the optional heater ring - it will make water hot enough for a cuppa - takes 20 mins to heat 8 oz of water.

Fun stuff, but no longer sold...
