Good News is No News (BBC R4)

Post by Winklebury »

I listened to this in the shower today, and wondered what people thought of this in a prepping context?

Will give it a listen tomorrow, but I already agree with the summary. The news outlets absolutely love to overblow anything remotely medical to shift papers (or online subscriptions), that's evidenced by the repeated attempts to turn Ebola into an extinction level event over the last decade amongst other things.
I try and flag it where I can, where it's obvious to me that reporters are deliberately watering down facts or cropping source material to suit, in order to engender some sort of panic in the masses. I would guess that it's the hope that people will "stay tuned" avidly to find out whether they're going to live or die, but I would swear some of it boils down to consumerism.
You can't tell me that all the negative Ebola press in the US hasn't been influenced by a US producer of NBC suits or face masks, when their sales are up over 40%.

I also havent listened to it yet, but having read the summary, it would make sense that most news is entertainment more than news anyway. If its entertainment, its a business. If its a business, underhand tactics may be used by unscrupulous people to make it seem like dramas happen everywhere and get people to feel politically motivated to do things when in fact the only things that they are getting motivated to do is to feel stressed.

There are many exceptions to that, but if you are really honest, with many of the situations out there, what can we actually do about them?

precious little.

So, drink your tea, relax and do the best you can to look after yourself as far as you can.

If we agree on the following:

"The news outlets absolutely love to overblow anything remotely medical to shift papers (or online subscriptions), that's evidenced by the repeated attempts to turn Ebola into an extinction level event over the last decade amongst other things." (Holoman)

&

"most news is entertainment more than news anyway. If its entertainment, its a business. If its a business, underhand tactics may be used by unscrupulous people to make it seem like dramas happen everywhere and get people to feel politically motivated to do things when in fact the only things that they are getting motivated to do is to feel stressed." then preppers are the quintessential example of the most gullible and misguided consumers of distorted media.

I say this as a prepper, but are we in fact already the very thing we are trying to avoid becoming?
