Welcome ward8g,
An interesting read but a read that made me think for a while.
Putting aside the many, many mundane things which may have us falling back on those preps we put in place, let's think of the big one for a moment.
I don't know if I'd fall into your definition of religious nut but I have a very deep personal interest in the pre-Christian heathen culture and practices of our Northern Germanic kinsmen.
This may seem by-the-by but there in one of the most oft' read works germane to that time is a reflection of a world which we would encounter should the big switch get turned to OFF.
Gone would be our provided world and back we would be thrust into the 'go and get it yourself' world of the dark ages.
So, why then do we bother to prep for a continuation or survival ?
For me it is a simple quote taken from two stanzas written 800 years ago, in a book in which the author collected the oral traditions and sayings of the Nordic peoples.
This work is called the Havamal and, as I said, these two stanzas are reason enough to prep for if and when the big one hits
[ The halt can manage a horse,
the handless a flock,
The deaf be a doughty fighter,
To be blind is better than to burn on a pyre:
There is nothing the dead can do.
It is always better to be alive,
The living can keep a cow.
Fire, I saw, warming a wealthy man,
With a cold corpse at his door.]
All that said, I expect power cuts, accidents and the lots of little woes to hit before any major thing visits us
Welcome again,
Wulfshead

Ward8G wrote: My favourite subject for fiction is the Doomsday Scenario, always has been.. from watching Mad Max as a child, to reading a full length copy of Stephen King’s “The Stand” from cover to cover with scarcely a break, (I called in sick for two days to read that book!), and films like Outbreak / Contagion, Deep Impact / Armageddon, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Day After Tomorrow, I Am Legend and Independence Day.. Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead! The Walking Dead, 28 Days Later, Survivors, Revolution and Falling Skies… the list goes on.. and on! Popular Culture is littered with examples of people fantasising about the End of the World. Through natural disasters, chemical or biological means, war, asteroid impact or alien invasion, it appears there are a lot of people thinking about the same thing, from the writers who create these stories to the masses who queue up to read or watch them, it seems to me that most of us are aware that something is going to have to change… soon! But what? What could we really choose to do that would give the world a chance to start again? Would anyone choose to wipe out millions of people? And who decides who the survivors are? I guess it’s ridiculous to think that there is anything that we, the population of Earth, could do to wipe the slate clean.. well, not by choice anyway. Or is it? Every day we choose to ignore global warming and the depletion of natural resources, we stick our heads in the sand to subjects like the chances of being hit by a comet or asteroid, the increasing risk of a new Swine/Bat/Bird virus which could potentially be another Spanish Flu (only worse, due to the world being a lot smaller place than a hundred years ago), or my personal favourite Alien Invasion!
Bring on the end of the world!!

Re: Ctrl+Alt+Del
After such an intro I would have expected a reply from Ward8g.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.
Robert Frost.
Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.
Me.

Hmm... Maybe he took too deep a breath in after that post and exploded?
Behind every great man is an even greater woman. She carried you, raised you and made you who you are.
Re: Ctrl+Alt+Del
Or perhaps it is 'Lights Out' on Ward 8.

Re: Ctrl+Alt+Del
'Lights out' reminds me 'Last Light' excellent book! Got talking to a guy about it in a taxi; the sort of weird stuff you do.
