Re: Going Back to My Younger Years
a pole,rod or perch is an old fashion imperial measurement equal to 5 metres or 5 1/2 yardsBrambles wrote:I lived that life too, Nate. I still grow and preserve most of our fruit and veg requirements on my 7 pole allotment (don't ask me what a pole is, I have no idea!) I keep a photo diary, and also keep a record of what does well, which varieties we like etc. This is my 4th year and I have finally got the whole plot under cultivation.
Good luck with your endeavours and enjoy your harvest.
Rod, Pole or Perch = 25 links = 5½ yards [about 5 metres]
Chain = 22 yards = 66 feet = 100 Links [length of a cricket wicket, about 20 metres]
Furlong = 10 chains = 220 yards [length of a furrow, about 200 metres]
Mile = 8 furlongs = 1760 yards = 5280 feet [a thousand Roman paces (a Roman 'pace' was actually 2 paces: left, right) – about 1600 metres] from http://www.johnowensmith.co.uk/histdate/measures.htm
so your allotment could be said to be 1 and 3/4 chains long.
The chain is still used on the Railway to express distances between locations.

Well my tomatoes are doing great. Got a bunch of tiny tomatoes and a lot of buds. The plants are about a metre tall and nearly the same spread. My peppers are running behind but looking good. My onions are almost ready for picking. Can't hardly wait until the toms are big enough for some fried green tomatoes! Might make some green tomato relish as well. Probably be lucky to have enough for them to ripen but will leave a few to make sure. Guess I still have what it takes to make a veg garden. Looking forward to next spring to increasing the size especially if I get an allotment so I can do some canning and preserving. The apple tree out front is producing quite well. Gonna make some apple preserves once thy ripen. Also have a bunch of plum and damson trees just across the road. Might do some preserving with them as well.

Good for you Nate! I can honestly say for me there is nothing so rewarding than seeing your stores full of home-grown, home-preserved food in all it's glorious forms.
Gives a great feeling of 'smug' too.
Edit: Don't forget Applesauce!
