What preps are you doing this week? part 2.

Gonna buy some more ice cube trays. I burned my fingers recently, quite badly, but knew what to do. put some ice cubes in a small pot of water, dunked my fingers in until it hurt cos it was so cold, pulled them out, put them in.... rince and repeat. I got away without as much as blister. Having ice on hand in case of burns is really useful.

This morning I was planning on logging up a few felled trees for next year's fuel but I was distracted by a parent sparrowhawk teaching two young ones how to hunt. Distracted for three pretty neat hours; the logs can wait

I have started thinking ahead to Autumn/Winter preps. Noticed a local department store selling lots of winter wares off cheaply so going to stock up on boots for me and the kids, gloves/hats/macs etc.
This alleged Summer weather got me on this train of thought, utterly dismal in the North West!

Thanks for posting! I will go to my local store and get a couple more boxes, they sell out of these rather quickly and they are good tea lights. Resorted my bathroom cupboard and have just the space for them, can't get any more under the bed

I've been thinking about winter, must be all the rain we've been having.
Ordered a spare full bottle of gas for my gas heater, another 28 cans of gas for camp stove & a coleman stove top oven.

I can't fit a woodburning stove as I'm in rented but I'm looking at something like the Anevay Frontier Stove for my 'just in case' cupboard.

Harvested my first ever floret of brocolli yesterday & my five year old has decided that as he 'grew it' he will eat it so that makes it a resounding success!
Got nearly a dozen small jars of jam made up from the fruit I've had out of my garden - strawberry, raspberry & blueberry plus some which is a mix of those fruits I'm calling garden jam.

Canned carrots & we're currently choking on courgettes (5 in the fridge as we speak plus about 4 wanting to be picked on the plants) even though I've now only got 2 plants.
Next year I'm only keeping one courgette plant.
It's just myself & a 5 year old & they don't seem to store well.

Planning the layout & making a planting map for the garden next year now I have a bit more of a clue.

I've bought the gear to make jam, we've got a load of rasps and strawbs so at the moment I've got all the gear and no idea although Mrs Deeps has done it before and I've been getting loads of advice from a couple of neighbours. Everyone seems surprised that 'little old me' fancies a crack at jam making, I suppose I can understand that, I probably don't seem the type.

I'll post my results, I'm planning on making a batch of raspberry jam tomorrow night, its my favourite and more importantly I've been told its easier as theirs plenty of pectin in the berries.

Pulled the last of the garlic up and am drying it this year I will keep a few cloves back to see if I can get plants from them normally just by the cloves from the garden centre.
