I was out for one of my usual phys sessions with prep mutt and had a few thoughts.
I am the sort of person who would happily disappear into the woods and never return but now with s family I plan on holding up for most situations but with the wife defending the house I will have to go for recce, information gathering and just general re supply outings. - I would choose by foot for most runs but it depends on distance.
Therefore my question here is given the scenario that you are running low on some important but not life threatening goods - what kit would you take, when and how would you travel and do you train for it now?
The only info you have is that 4days in there is some radio news that there is rioting in cities, power has been off since day 2 and emergency services advise everyone to stay inside and lock the doors.
Your neighbours have followed the advice and know just as much as you. You have all spotted a lot of military presence on the main road in the distance and by air.

only four days in , i`d still be locked down .if you need to go out after only four days then you have a few holes in your preps that its best to look at sooner rather than later .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .
Re: Prep to fight
I've been running 7miles a day, 5days a week with a small bag on my back. It's undulating terrain and it's generally well used by dog walkers do occasionally I play a game of hide and no find me. It's a bit bizarre but occasionally fun and great training.
In my bag I take:
2l camelpak
Notebook
Pencil and pen
Key ring set
My dry bag - it has a 1kg weight simulating fishing, hunting kit (some of my routes on private land so no poaching.
Binos
Map
Compass
2 energy gels
Spare socks
First aid kit
My dog has a pack with his treats, poo bags
I would take a knife with me just not on training sessions. I have a could of cache along my route just in case.
Often run in trainers but I'll soon be upgrading to boots but don't want to push it too hard

This was a basic scenario. I did mention non life threatening so maybe your kids running low on insulin - generally must be refrigerated - it's better to get it early on.unsure wrote:only four days in , i`d still be locked down .if you need to go out after only four days then you have a few holes in your preps that its best to look at sooner rather than later .
Why stay locked up when you can't identify why? A 2hr recce could make or break a scenerio - what if SHTF and it's coming your way??? What if it was going to be over in a few days. Knowledge is worth more than kit.

What kit etc.? As already said I'd hopefully still be sat happily at home but if I were in a situation as you describe I would try to blend in with the great unwashed, try to avoid camo and tactical gear try to look like I was in a worse situation than I actually was . Travel mostly on foot as that's what the majority would be doing and as regards to appearance try to wear oversized and dirty clothing to belie the fact you may be super fit and healthy underneath .. Try to sound as dim or gormless as possible when talking to others that may be able to influence events, it may get you food or whatever and may prevent you getting attacked.

Wife at home while you're out on recce? Hmmm, I plan to send the wife out.
If you have to ask why, you've clearly never met my wife, nor would you want to in a SHTF scenario.

Well we're urban, I'm over 50 arthritic (among other things) so I'll not be doing any running, I've always thought I'd stand a better chance of doing them (anyone who attacked me)some damage if I wasn't wheezing for breath and exhausted, I'm sure anyone on meds will tell you that you don't just pop out and get them, if you're running low you ask for a prescription from your doctor, or put in your repeat one, or collect repeat dispensing items at a pre set date, it's all a bit more bean counted than you may think, a repeat takes at least 2 full working days to be ready to take to the chemist ( which can easily mean Monday dropped in, not ready till Wednesday afternoon or effectively ThursdayBubbles wrote: I did mention non life threatening so maybe your kids running low on insulin - generally must be refrigerated - it's better to get it early on.

I like debating scenarios sometimes, but it's horses for courses I'm afraid, if we were locked down I've always thought information would be vital, listening in the main to the news, radio and even out of the windows to get a sense of what is going on, and there would be plenty to do in terms of deploying options to cater to the situation at hand, whatever it turned out to be, I think the noteworthy thing here is you're having fun, keeping fit and that doing so could be of some use, many of us do things we enjoy with the excuse that it would be useful in these scenarios, but the real mundane things like having enough meds, food, even toilet paper for a given amount of time are the first priority for most, for me as a carer and a parent, putting myself in harms way would be irresponsible to say the least, so a question.. What would the family do without you? If they'd be screwed then going out is madness, and preparing so as you don't have to is crucial, but don't quit having your fun in the mean time
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
Re: Prep to fight
You make an excellent point plymtom it's not all about the meds but it was just an example. I wanted some input in people idea. Having spent many years serving I know information is only useful if you trust the source. My eyes are pretty trustworthy so going out if only for a few hours isn't irresponsible to me it's essential information. My family will do very well on the supplies I currently have and I have plans in place otherwise.
My point is not about bug in or bug out its would we prefer to live ignorance or plan more specifically.
I know meds take time to acquire but if my foot needed something I will find a way to get it. I just prefer sneaky sneaky to outright looting or worse.

Well people being people you are going to meet a lot of others doing the same thing as you, people going to their allotments to water their plants as well as all the dog walkers walking the dogs or going to look after other animals.
How do you know that its not a terrorist attack and that they haven't let a nasty virus/germ free, and that by going out and coming back you will not be endangering your wife and children. As you have said that the stuff you are going for is not life threating I'd stay in and do with out at lest until I had more info.
You would be better off getting to know your neighbours now and thinking of ways to block the entries to your street to keep out the hungry hoard's if they come your way.

A battery powered AM/FM radio would be handy in this situation, just lock up sit tight and await instructions. I would be too busy eating the contents of or 2 freezers for the first week or two anyway
