Nice little Kelly kettle.

Post by Derv »

Been having a look through mine and Mrs Derv's emergency gear and spotted a startling lack of brew kit :o apart from one hexy stove I bought for a cycle tour ages ago.

So after looking through the how are you prepping thread winter blackouts from 2014, I've had a nose at some Kelly kettles, properly wanted one since I saw a guy brewing up with one when I was fishing a couple of years back

I've just ordered a nice black Kelly kettle for 34 quid on eBay. It seems to have some good reviews and seems pretty cheap for the make. So I'm feeling smug :D , but haven't told Mrs D yet.

Hopefully it's ok to share the link on here and it won't anger the mods  , I'm not the seller or linked to the seller in any way, just thought I'd share the bargains!

I think I'll be having that! Might compare it to the one I saw youtube videos on, a British make it is, will see if I can get details. The British one is about £50. Don't know why they even have to cost £30 though, they're just aluminium and they break easy I've heard.

I've got the kelly kettle, went for the 1.5 litre steel Base Camp one with all bells and whistles. But I'm after something backpack sized now.

I did see quite a few videos on YouTube about this model, even a nice "how to brew up" for numpties version.

Video reviews seemed good, it could fit I'm my bob, would look the nuts when out in my truck and its black and called the desert storm model, worth a punt!

A few places had them for about fifty quid online, and these are direct from the maker, at that cheap I'm hoping that it doesn't mean another british firm is folding.

Here's that British one that I was considering. The main advantage seems to be that you can use it as a water carrier and it packs up small. Does the one you've bought do that?

This one is slightly cheaper on eBay too - do you know of any particular advantage to the one you got?

I don't think there are any other differences other than the other one is anodised black.

I only went for that one really because I'm a tart for stuff like that lol! Plus it will look proper gnarly in years to come when it gets its used patina.

Now the council down here has stopped taking the green bins, I'll have loads of smaller bits to burn in it in the wood store.

No causal link between Aluminium and Altzheimers has been proven, indeed the most recent research has suggested it was a coincidental link.

We absorb plenty in the form of residual salts from treated drinking water (as a sulphate its used to treat it) and there are relatively large amounts in some vaccines and medicines.

I did have a look at some of that research a few years back when I started bricking it about my aluminium mess tins. It's on the Altzheimers society's big myths about the disease list.

I think as long as your kidneys are functioning as they should, so if you did absorb any it can be flushed out, you don't boil tomatoes or fruit juice in it or don't eat the kettle things will be fine.

The tripod stand thing is optional, I think it just protects the grass from scorching and makes the fire pot a little bit more stable.

Aluminium was long ago linked with Alzheimer's but I think it's been poopooed by the experts now. I think the major drawback with it is that it's soft and fragile. The steel ones are stronger, more reliable and more expensive.

The black one does look cooler, I admit. Might be worth paying the extra for. I like that there is no farting around with chains and handles like on my kelly kettle. I've burned myself loads of times with it. The F1 expensive one in the link doesn't come with a storage bag, but really I think you need one with a kettle like this. All those little parts to it need to be kept together. The F1 one, as well, had a nice little system that made it pack away smaller than my kelly kettle does. There doesn't seem to be any information on that stuff on the cheaper one. Hmm, I'm tempted and conflicted. Space is an issue when I only have one bag wild camping.
