This thread has reminded me to look in to buying one of those portable free-standing gas heaters. Last year they were about £100 in places like B&Q but they seem to be a lot cheaper elsewere at the moment. They seem to all be the same but does anyone have any recommendations?

I recall saying it mught be a bad winter last year with apples, brambes and elderberries out in abundance. To no avail as it was a average winter . Meh giving up on amounts of fruit / weather connections. Here hopes its mild.

Yes, there is a chance of temperatures being somewhat chilly.

Most of us won't be able to afford to have the heating on all the time so we will have to use our longjohns (and I am thinking of getting more sets of thermals for this winter incase I knacker the old lot that are kinda loosing their fuzziness).

I still have my hot water bottles, rarely throw out all my old clothes as I never know when I may need an extra layer, have my camping gas stove and kettle (and ethanol fireplace) and trangia. Still have my charcoal hand warmer thingy from last year at the ready (and want to get more charcoal sticks for it) and the first aid kit is also looking good. There are enough stocks of beans and cans of cheap foods to keep me alive in case of anything really for the short term and so the basics are covered.

It's a question of overstocking the medicines and nutritional supplements that will be the next stage.

And yes, I am knitting hats on the round looms for the family for christmas. Hope to experiment with sock making too.

I also want to make a tea cosy, but that's another story.

Is it going to be freezing cold? Who knows, but we all know one thing, it might be a but on the chilly side of things and the UK is only really designed for spring and autumn, not high summer or February.

This is a point, but the bugs and viruses live in people and the people live in nice warm cosy centrally heated houses and offices! Keep taking the vitamin c!

I bought a paraffin one from house bargains, it was under £100 and runs on caldo low odour fuel.

My God i tried those hats on looms and a disaster it was, so i returned to

cast on 70 stiches

rib 4 inches with knit 1 pearl 1 then stocking stich as far as needed then thread through and pull tight all the stiches and sew up

much easier.

It's timely that you mention this...walking the dog today I noticed the leaves on a few trees changing colour already. Also a heck of a lot of sloes and elderberries. The old boys always reckoned on a lot of berries preceding a bad Winter. Plus we are overdue one. I certainly hope not.

Yes from my experience this is the case, the heavier the fruit crop, the more servere the winter to come,
my bluberry trees & raspberries etc all had a very good crop this year, so we'll see soon enough.
