I also go out and physically dispose of them , normally with a floor scraper. Another idea is to place a few dustbin lids or black plastic bags around the garden. You'll find that the slugs will rest under such things allowing you to pick them up in the daytime.
I've heard good reports about the nematodes but as to chemical methods I prefer to stay clear. I don't like using weed killers either.

Salt! Rings of salt around the outside edges of your planting, they hate the stuff as it dries them out to a crisp! I used to do this along our garden path years ago to keep them out of the way for hanging out the washing, worked every time

Ive resorted to the £land blue pellets, you dont know just how bad things are till you put them down, the first night i did it, we woke up to a garden coverd in slime and over 100 dead slugs, this happened for about 3 days before numbers started to go down.
i only felt a little bad when i realised my brocoli had catapillers on it and it wasnt the slugs
