shelving options

Post by 7 lives »

Am lucky enough to have a brick out house about 5ft wide and 8ft long.
Now empty I want to explore shelving options-Mr 7 lives has a lot of mountaineering stuff and I have the start of my preps.
Am not remotely capable with electric boys toys but realise would have to secure shelving to wall-squashed grandchildren are not an option!
Anybody got any hints -re materials was thinking metal floor to wall ?
The last wooden shelves I put up have sagged int middle!

I acquired some of the shelving sold by Axminster ( similar to these but with timber shelving http://www.axminster.co.uk/medium-duty- ... shelf-unit) . Easy enough to put up and join together although the chipboard shelves on mine are not my preferred option, in the link they look like metal which makes them more like the old style Dexion . If you can attempt to use a drill or even get in a local handyman then a good option is simple cheap London pattern shelf brackets ( less than a pound a piece at screw fix for 12" ones) and 3/4" shuttering ply at around £20-22 a sheet.

Have a google around too. I linked to Axminster to show the sort of thing I have . I didn't buy it but got it when a friend was clearing a workshop. Axminster are a great place , I was like a kid in a sweet shop when I visited one of their showrooms , but some of their stuff can be a tad on the pricy side. You could also try free cycle , someone may have old shelving units on there or you could try local auction places . Also don't forget other options , things like sideboards or '70's wall units can be gotten for virtually nothing and they would make decent storage possibilities .

have a look on ebay for ideas, businesses are always selling shelving off cheaply if they move premises, go under etc.

give you some good ideas and a lot if it is industrial type racking - good if you've got lots of or heavy gear to store.

only thing is you may have to collect it /disaesmble & reassemble yourself and of you do have to move it yourself you maybe limited to a geographical area

why don't you get those office ones, they are 2 long strips one either side with holes right the way doen, then you hook the brackets into the strips were you want them and the shelves or planks of wood fit on the brackets screwed in so they are secure. saves space too.
