Sorry to hear that Jansman, I assume as soon as you've been paid you'll be looking for something else. I think most of us have had our wages dicked around with at some time or another, its a horrible experience, something that you should be able to take for granted pulled from under you. Good luck with it mate.

That job s finished. I was only working part time originally but then I went off the beef line to driving for them to help out. My son in law has told me of a labouring / driving job at his place. He rang the gaffer(son in law is well respected) and I am having a chat at 3 pm Monday.

Nothing surprises me now as this has happened before, and we position ourselves now for this. It is one reason after the Duchess got the bullet I set up a part time bike repair business. It has always been a hobby anyway. Most of the work comes from a bike shop in town putting bikes together after delivery( and I use his facilities much of the time. I also have a nice line in buying/ repairing/ selling vintage fishing tackle. But it is all erratic so a steady income , like all of us, is required.

Of course, I am not unique. As poppypiesdad said a few posts ago his work is unstable ( good luck with that by the way!)Although there is work out there it is all very shaky. It keeps life interesting.

Boy, it really does, doesn't it :(

Sorry to hear this, jansman - the situation where this sort of thing can happen regularly has been building for a long time, hasn't it, but I know its getting worse. My sister's a teacher in a public school that charges a *lot* of money, and would never have dreamed of joining a union till about two years ago. Then, because of the way extra duties kept getting loaded on, without notification, consultation or recompense, she did, and she'll pay the dues till she leaves. The things that go on quietly are shocking - I'm glad the boys made a scene even tho, as you say, *that* sort of scene isn't the style I'd use.

I would urge everyone who works for an employer to join the relevant Trades Union. It has nothing to do with politics, as the law says you can opt out( you have to be offered this legally) of the Political Levy. A union is your protection. I could cite various incidents where the union have helped my Wife and I. Now they will make sure I get holiday pay etc. that is owed.

Regarding the 'persuasion ' the lads used, it seems it was comical in a scary way. The less articulate of the lads openly threatened violence ( Line Butchers ain't the sharpest knives in the drawer  ), but when the boss got into his car they lifted the front up so he couldn't drive away! Priceless!

How shocking!! Hope everyone gets sorted soon. It's bad out there at the moment and it seems the days of secure employment are long gone.

Thank you Decaff, thank you 7 lives. Contrary to the news we hear, on the ground in Real World, employment is precarious. Years ago I read about 'Portfolio Working' or a number of part time jobs if you like. I never thought I would end up like that

As for tomorrow, I am quietly confident. The factory is still owned by the same family. They specialised for two world wars and in between making army webbing. They still do this along with aerospace Kevlar products. They look for more 'mature' people with a good work ethic. So if it is down to early starts and getting my hands mucky, well... I am used to getting up at daft o'clock, and I have done work that would make a maggot puke!!!

I truly believe that if you are prepared to adapt, and swallow your pride then there is a living to make.

Oh yes, about prepping ( which is why we are here).Madam has just done her online shop for tomorrow. Bless her, just like every time we have a job - type SHTF , she goes into crisis- mode. The shop was half what we normally get ( filled the fridge basically) as she said, " That is what the stockpile is for".

What a woman.
