Ethanol Gel Fuel Review.

Post by Brambles »

After recommending Ethanol Gel Fuel, I thought I'd better try the chafing fuel as I've only used the Swiss Army gel fuel cooker.

For those of you who have a Trangia or SVEA meths stove I have done a comparison burn.
The stove I used is my little sterno.

Boil 200ml water. U-HEET gel fuel- 5 mins SVEA cooker from cold- 4 mins SVEA fully primed- 2mins.

From memory, it's comaprable with the Swiss Army gel cooker.

As you can see, The fully primed SVEA wins hands down on speed.

Price.
Now last time I looked, the Swiss Army cooker was between £3.50 and £5.00 depending on where you go.
These U-HEETs are 75p and apparently last 2 hours.
500ml of meths is about £2.50 but I've never really made a note of how long it will last.

So to round up, the gel fuel is easy to light, easy to transport, is safe and cheap and can be used indoors. It fits in the Swedish Army cook set, standard trangia cook set and the Sterno stove. I shall defo be getting more, they're a very handy thing to have about.

A quick pic. ;)

Thanks for that Brambles where did you get the stove from? I would like to get one for MIL who has suffered 10 power cuts in the last month or so and I think chaffing gellwould be safe than gas. She is 94 btw.

Yep, I'd wholeheartedly agree it's much safer. The only possible problem would be you can't really see the flame. But it is easy to snuff out and I would recommend getting some tapers to light it with so that she can set it up then light it.

The stove is a Sterno folding stove that I got when I was in USA a few years ago. It's a brilliant bit of kit. Folds flat and is surprisingly sturdy. If you know anyone in US I'd get them to post one over, or you might be able to get one on that well known auction site. Just so you have a comparison. Mine cost $10.

Thanks Bramble, I'll have a word with some of my USA friends as they are not cheap to buy via the usual sources.
