Dr. Martens Wonder Balsam - is this posh dubbin?

Post by Mr R »

Grateful for some advice. I have bought a pair of DM's which are made of 'greasy leather', instead of my standard steel toe-capped bovver boots. They are very comfortable and will make good walking boots, but what to waterproof them with?

The DM website states that I should use their 'wonder balsum' to care for this type of leather - am I correct in thinking that this is merely dubbin with added coconut oil and other nonsense?

Thank you in advance.

A tin of this came with my forlife boots, I've always sworn by nikwax or graingers and to be honest dismissed this stuff however after using it I have to say it's pretty good and a little certainly goes a long way, now I only use my docs for about town etc etc so I've not truly tested the waterproofing of them with this wax compared to nikwax or graingers but it certainly cleans the boots up nicely.

Sparkyy,

Thanks for the info. I was talking to the chap who owns the DM shop in Bristol and he said, more or less, the same thing.

I'm sticking with my dubbin!

Yes I'm not sure I'd buy it over the others mentioned but as it came free with the forlife boots (highly recommend them by the way) it didn't really cost me anything.

I've been very impressed with the forlife boots, they're not the cheapest however after reading a few reviews etc it seems dr martens really do honour it and replace them as and when so fingers crossed I'm set for my casual boots for life now plus they're amazingly comfortable.
