I sometimes leave the back door open because I forget, but I never do it intentionally ... ground floor windows don't get left open, definitely not. Upstairs windows are open more often than not, but since I work from home, not really a problem :) I leave them wide open overnight too (with flyscreens). This is a nice little town, but I live near the "worst" area (i.e. a single block of flats  ). A car was stolen locally a few weeks ago, and that was rare enough for the Community Police Officer to leaflet 100 or so local homes, including mine. I've never lived in such a crime-free area

I remember once I thought I had lost my house/car keys. The binmen were driving up the road and our bin was not out, so I parked up, ran in the house to the back garden, dragged the bin out for them, quickly throwing any other rubbish in the bin before they emptied it. It had started to rain and the OH had washing hanging out, so I ran into the back garden again took all the washing down, dumped it in the kitchen, job done. Shut the front and back doors and started looking for my keys to lock the back door, after hours of searching I was convinced that I had thrown the keys in the bin with the odd bits of rubbish. 2 days later the misses handed me my keys, she had found them at the bottom of the washing peg basket in the back garden.

I'm a bit anal about locking stuff up, but I still managed to leave the car unlocked one night, making lots of trips back and fro, and meant to go back out. Luckly it's fairly sleepy where I am so it was still there in the morning.

They lost the tv and dvd player which were carted away in their own car, the keys hanging up in the hall! Having said that, I've come home from work once to find that I've left the kitchen window open. Hopefully the alarm would scare them off.

Many years ago we had the TV stolen out of our living room whilst I was in the bath!!!!, doors always locked now. Equally a relative had her briefcase stolen off the passenger seat of her car when stopped at traffic lights, car doors locked when ever going into a town now.

I often leave doors open but we're ok here. Once we went out for the day and left the dog - a farm collie - lying on the back step. He hadn't moved an inch 6 hours later when we got home lol - I felt terrible!

I have been known to sleepwalk & once woke up in my pjs on the street in front of my house having pulled the door to behind me & locked myself out.
It had one of those locks you need a key to open from the outside.
Half an hour later, my next door neighbour had very kindly picked the lock on the front door for me & I walked into my house only to find I'd left the patio doors wide open.
Not just unlocked but actually open.

I now live in a different house with doors you have to lock with keys & check them frequently.

You open the front door get all the stuff out of the car, lock the car door and then shut the front door leaving the key in it. My Mrs has just gone to the shops and as she was shutting the front door they were still there 12 hours later.   I think I dodged a bullet there. :) Anyone else done anything similar? or are you too embarrassed to own up :D

Never done that but I did fall asleep on the couch there a few weeks ago, woke up about 3am decided to drag myself up to bed, passing the front door I noticed the storm doors were open so I went out to close them and in my sleepy stupor pulled the front door closed behind me........ the missus was away for the weekend with the girls...... I had to break in, it was shockingly easy.

she didnt even mind when I told her as apparently she wanted to buy a new door anyway so all good in the end.
