Wasn't sure where to stick this but thought you guys would know.

I'm thinking of getting my bro one of those VW wood burners for xmas and wanted to get a bit of wood to start him off so we can see it working after he unwraps it.

Does anyone know if these are ok and would he need anything else to get it going?

theres some like this:

in our local £1 shop if we want a quick fire light that and stick a few logs either side and away it goes

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gardeco-FIRELOG ... B00HS0Q6US

and ive already mentioned wood shavings ;)

if your going to play at fire lighting this gives a good idea about the main stages of fire lighting without magic potions and blocks,,,

My favourite topic! dry wood of any kind basically is good. To get him started take a walk in the local wood or along the river and find windfall branches etc. If you can snap em they are dry. Just take a rucksack when you go. I do it when I walk the dog, as I NEVER go for a walk and come back empty handed! it all adds up.

Please , please don't go buying those overpriced bags of wood from garages or supermarkets. Suitable firewood is everywhere if you look.

Oh yes, and the best fire starter is news paper and sticks ( I like split sections of pallet planks).

He can buy the big bag of logs himself, too big for me to wrap..lol! I just wanted a small box to wrap up so we can try it after he's opened it xmas day.

My friend says her rabbits use wood pellets and she has loads she can bring some over free (for the Kelly Kettle I was getting for me).. would they work instead of the pet sawdust shavings? or to drop down middle to keep it going in place of twigs (if had run out of my free twigs!) She wanted to know how many I'd need per boil (was going for biggest Kelly Kettle to fill flask of tea and hot water bottles in one go) to give her an idea as she's never seen these Kelly Kettles either

By the way I'm none the wiser after looking at the photo of different sized pieces of wood???? I thought a video was going to start when I clicked on it or something..lol!

I'd do that for my Kelly Kettle but I wanted a small pack in a box I could wrap up so he didn't guess what his present was ..a bunch of long twigs with an xmas ribbon round might give it away a bit! ;)

I saw them on ebay. you can get a gas bottle version too but I'm not comfortable with keeping gas canisters around, though it will be at his house I still figured the wood burner version would be cheaper fuel and safer to keep!

I consider collecting firewood, my hobby! great excuse to explore likely looking woods, up here in the north of Scotland there's no end of standing dead wood for collection.
Never take my van anywhere without an axe and a folding saw, even in laybys you'd be surprised how often I pick up a pallet or two, kindling for a fortnight.

Buy a big bag box him some up and keep the rest for yourself ;)

The shavings catch light much easier than pellets

heres my quick brew kit....

Image

couple of baby oil soaked cotton face wipe pad make up things..

few bits of wood

and a sharp knife

i placed one pad in the bottom of the stove and used a knife to shave up some shavings making some fine thin ones and some thicker slivers,,,,

Image

then i made a "feather stick"

Image

and had some small dry sticks handy and a couple of larger bits.....

I lit the other disc soaked in baby oil (i used flint and magnesium block but a match / lighter would work and dropped it onto the shavings..)

i left it 10 seconds or so to catch

i then held the feather stick over the flame till it caught and let it drop into the fire...

then added a few more bits of wood as it took hold
