Does anyone have one of these or something similar? (or better with solar charging option too for camping?)

I'm thinking for just getting the news in case of powercuts as I'm profoundly deaf so radio is no use to me, but if could see local weather on one of these to know if more snow was coming or if they were reporting on a mass blackout etc (in my area) etc. I might be able to pick up enough from weather charts and lip-reading though be even better if it displayed subtitles!
My other option would be I already have a 12" Samsung Galaxy Tablet which my bro got me last xmas. Now I thought of those USB TV sticks though it doesn't have a USB port I'm sure one of the ports is a mini USB so maybe with mini USB-USB adapter I could use a TV stick or one of those USB sticks with portable broadband on to still be able to get online to access weather reports and contact people if needed help. I'd also need a way to charge it as it doesn't take regular batteries like the TV shown above which takes 6 AAA batteries, which could get a bulk lot cheap (not rechargeable) in case of powercuts. People have mentioned solar panels and chargers on here how big are they? and how do I know whether they'd charge my tablet up/keep it charged for me to use it as a TV/access BB during a powercut?
My phone is with giff gaff and though it offers an internet option of so many GB's a month I struggle to use the phone for the purpose of accessing web pages and sites (due to small screen size) so it tends to only get used for texting and uploading photo's. Giff Gaff offer a tablet package but I'm unsure as to whether I can put a sim card in my 12" tablet to make use of this? or if I got it on the phone how to link the tablet (I forget the word) so I can access the internet on the tablet via the phone..(if you get what I mean).
which would be my best option?
Battery TV or how to use existing tablet?

You can get things like this to charge tablets, phones, even usb powered battery chargers, there's no guarantee that you will get enough sunlight but if you have some of these or similar it can tide you over.

You could even use the solar panel to recharge AA rechargeable batteries for the TV if you get it.

Deeps, where does that get its power *from*? Do you keep it ready charged from the mains?
Re: Battery TV or how to use existing tablet?
You can charge the power banks through mains via a usb connection, the solar panels have usb connections too, I've got different sized ones, they go all the way down to pocket sized ones. Whenever I'm more than a walk away from home I usually stick a 6400MaH one in my pocket, I can get 1.8 charges on my phone out of it, you can even get torches that have a usb charging connection, you've got to love the Universal bit of USB's.Arzosah wrote:Deeps, where does that get its power *from*? Not sure if this is helpful, but I picked up a Chuwi Vi7 tablet from Gearbest.
It's only a 7 inch tablet but it's much more readable than my phone and the best part is that as well as being a WiFi device, it'll take a 3G sim card (and works perfectly.) Basically a huge smartphone.
It cost me the princely sum of 34 quid, shipping included!

my issue would be in a powercut the router wouldn't work so no wifi which is why I was thinking of the BB dongle's and wondering how they work?
Does anyone on here have the Samsung Galaxy Pro 12" ? ..and know whether you can put a sim data plan in it? or know how to get TV channels on it? seems a shame not to use what I already have here
Those Anker solar panels look good. I can't see point of the hard drive style power pack as that needs charging from mains too so surely in a powercut that lasted a while you're going to have the same problem? There also seems to be a limit on how many times it will charge a device?

Aha, precisely. It doesn't need WiFi. It works with a sim card..katilea wrote:EddieEnzyme wrote:Not sure if this is helpful, but I picked up a Chuwi Vi7 tablet from Gearbest.

What about a car battery and inverter? We used to use them for events, run a big printer and computer all day off the one on the old 4x4.
Re: Battery TV or how to use existing tablet?
Thanks for your suggestion Deeps, I bought one of these.

What voltage is your router most are mains via a transformer.. On that transformer there's the output voltage which is 12v I can run ours off a 12v caravan battery if I need to
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong
Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
