First Aid Kit

Post by metatron »

I know I've seen countless first aid kit threads on American suites, which basically consist of everything except the operating table, but I was wondering what does the UK prepper have in theirs?

I tend to be of the realistic mindset and don't see myself carry out a road side trichotomy or closing up a bullet hole, although I do go shooting, we practice safe firearms handling and never point them at ourself or each other, even when unloaded.

I'm currently updating my FAK with a similar approach to you i.e: i'll leave the suturing to the docs.

Looking at your pics, i've noticed a few things i still need to add for example a small knife/cutting tool/lighter amongst others.

Maybe you dont have room for this suggestion, but the FAK we go hiking with, always has an instant ice pack (Koolpak) in it and to be honest i've had to replace those more than anything else in my current FAK but, different people different needs.

Interesting post/pictures.

I had a few instant ice pack's but they did indeed get used by someone (not me), I should probably replace them, like I've got more eye wash and burn gel on order, as I find pain killers (normally others with headaches), plasters, bandages, eye wash and burn gel is the order of things getting used.

I always went on the theory of: first aid kit is only as good as your competence in using it. It's all well and good having a comprehensive first aid kit but if you're not being thorough on simple things like avoiding contamination - which could cause life threatening infection it's not much use!

In most day-to-day situations, basic things like a tourniquet, sterile water and absorbent pads/battlefield dressings will be enough until the paramedics get there, I certainly wouldn't want to attempt tying off arteries or resetting bones, because unless you have good medical training you'll do more harm than good!

Of course in a SHTF situation where there might not be any paramedics, things like haemostats and sutures/steri strips will be very handy, but again, i'd be more concerned with having sterile gloves, boiled water and a clean surface/area to work on. It's all well and good stopping an arterial bleed but if it then gets sepsis...

I will say though that one of the most valuable things in my kit is a head torch with spare batteries, being able to see clearly without holding a torch - or relying on someone to hold it steady/get it in the right place is a big help.

I've been meaning to do a maintnence check on my FAK so thanks to this thread i'll do that later, and post pics too :D

I like your FAK's. They are very practical which is definitely what you need. A couple things I would add to the car one is some more gauze pads, a couple triangle bandages (can't tell if that's one in the top left corner or gauze in the bag), and maybe some alcohol gel for your hands.

These are just somethings that I have more of in my car FAK, the rest of my bag is very similar to yours.

Vinyl gloves to reduce the risk of infection are handy, as is sterile water for cleaning wounds, thats also a drink if SHTF. Somebody already mentioned a head torch I think.
