Hi all,
I have a couple of gas masks and issue canisters that are still in date. I understand the regular army issue canisters don't work so well in the biological department? Or at least limited in that field in relation to other types of germs maybe?
If so can anyone recommend a "type" and/or source to purchase canisters?
What about expiry for canisters as well? Are they something that will degrade lots by its given date?
Also, as the mask is quite on the rubbery side I've never been to sure about how to care for them? I've always kept mine in it's bag out of the sun and heat but wondering if I could/should do more?
Cheers

S10 canisters only really go out of date if in a cbrn environment for more 30 days if liquid agent, and if they are soaked water or submerged will no longer work so will need changing as for expiry i would give them 4 months in use and 3-6 years depending on storage conditions.
Hope this helps

Re: Care for and bits for S10 Gas Mask?
yeah S10 canisters are limited when it comes to biological contaminants but the canisters are good for about 3 weeks in a CBRN environment as long as they are not submerged in water or crushed etc,
as for storage , keep it in a cool dry place and don't stack heavy items on it as it can mis-shape it and will result in a poor seal, and you can but like screwed up newspaper in it to help it keep its shape.
hope this helps, any more info ask as currently serving and happen to have all the manuals etc although we don't use them any more we still know etc.

Try e-bay or Amazon , the canisters for the s10 are still manufactured and used on other respirators so the May have a different name on the try checking the manufacturer's web site

Cheers all for your comments, it's appreciated
@ Abek2p3 and @ gaba...thanks for those links . I remember seeing these quite a while back but couldn't remember the details to find them again. From memory don't the coloured bands dictate what the filter will filter?
I don't know if you would consider the price of the cf32 canisters as expensive? (then again...if it saves your life it's pretty cheap )
I always try to buy mil spec/issue as I think about robustness but then again I wouldn't want to be wearing one for days on end
Any recommendations on other types of masks and filters? Am mainly thinking that as I've had my S10s for about 5 years now, will they still do the job? (hence asking about maintenance etc).

I found my one to hand back when I left the mob, I hadn't seen it for at least 10 years (hadn't used it in about 18 years) and while I can't say how effective the filter would be, the rubber and fittings were good and completely undamaged.FlashPan wrote:Cheers all for your comments, it's appreciated

Re: Care for and bits for S10 Gas Mask?
Hi I would only use a canister that came sealed in silver rapper for s10 as I found 1/4 did not work when I used s10 (in cs gas chamber). for bio threat I use a 3m mask, the filters are very good and the fp3 rated mask fits well even tho I have not stored with much care. a full mask and filters is expensive so you are prob better off just getting a fp3 rated disposable face mask, which will do for virus outbreaks etc.
