paraffin lamps

Post by bungee »

I was looking at getting a paraffin lamp or two. The ones on amazon look a bit ... Meh.
Any recommendations?
I liked the look of the Coleman lamps, although they're quite expensive I'm guessing you get what you pay for and therefore are worth the money.
They say they use Coleman fuel or unleaded petrol but will they work with paraffin?

I got mine on eBay, cheap as chips with a nice crystal/glass heavy base on them. Car boots and charity shops are another good place to look.

My problem is the smell of the parafin oil. Makes me feel sick!

So they will work on paraffin as well as petrol and Coleman fuel?

Colemans work with petrol or Coleman fuel. Not paraffin. If you buy paraffin lamps, do you have a reliable source of fuel? I used to keep these lamps. Now I use LED. Battery and wind up. Brighter and safer. And less smelly.

I have 4 Coleman lanterns if you use petrol they burn dirty and eventually clog the pipe that supplies fuel to the mantle....

Coleman fuel is pricy BUT

I use this which is pure napthia same as Coleman fuel many users recommended it across many camping and bushcraft forums...

Oh and its shit hot for mosqueto control ;)

I've got a couple of Feuerhand Hurricane lanterns. They're the bits.

I have them not only as a source of light, but Diamond Lil put me on to the idea of usig them as a frost free heating system for the bathroom.

Is it hard to get fuel? I picked up a 4 litre tub from a garage sale and I thought it was fairly cheap on amazon?

I saw these and thought they seemed good. Any problems with the wick? I read they
Often fall into the oil reserve.
Any idea what size wick they take ?

It is getting harder to source it. Perhaps me being tight, but I used to use paraffin to heat the greenhouses. Then, I was able to buy it from a pump at very reasonable rates. The prepack * I * think is dear. Now I use electricity in the greenhouses.
