Hello from Hertfordshire

Post by Squared »

Hi folks.

Im male, mid to late thirties, married one child, reasonably fit. My background is Army, 8 years in the Royal Engineers as a Combat Engineer and I like to think I was a pretty good one at that, plenty of tours, plenty of exotic travel so you would think id still be switched on? No, Ive now been out the Army alot longer than I was in & Ive become as slack and laidback as a sloth on holiday, put it this way, its not uncommon for me to go out and leave the front door open or on the latch becasue I simply cant be arsed to take my keys with me: 'it only ever happens to other people' That **** ends now.

What has got me wanting to start prepping is because of a recent event involving family members that offered up that old oft repeated quote "I never thought it would would happen to me" well it did & therefore it might happen to me, or my wife, or child. So I can either bury my head in the sand and live by the philosophies that ive lived by for over a decade now which is 'it'll be alright' and 'it only ever happens to other people' or I can take ownership of my life and leadership over those around me and take out the simple insurance policy of getting my life sorted. The purpose of registering here is to both learn and bounce info of people and also to give me a forum to make a written record in front of others as a motivational tool so that I dont jack at some point into the process.

I need to take a step back and carry out an audit of everything I do, I have kind of done that this week, Ive broken life down into simplistic lateral steps and have carried out basic risk assesments of what could possibly go wrong and the liklehood of it going wrong and how I could reduce the risk as far is practibaly possible and if needs be, make life as comfortable as possible after an event. This is from not being burgled through to car break downs right up to the super long odds events relating to, or as a consequence of World current and political affairs, we still have Trident, its politicaly damaging and its expensive to the point of threatening a G5 nations economy so there must be a good reason for it? Also, im not afraid to admit, prepping looks like a lot of fun! a chance to do all kinds of things that I can get a real buzz from learning and putting into practice. I miss being out in he field and Id like to teach my young un a few things.

What Im actualy prepping for and in order of what priority is i beleive covered in a different thread and I will tabulate that info in a more detailed way there.

Speak to you soon. :)

Hello and welcome.

Sometimes an 'event' is all that's needed to give us a prepping kick up the posterior.

There is a wealth of information on this forum to help you get started. Have a mooch but please ask any questions you might have.

Welcome mate, I hope you find plenty of stuff to keep you going on here, it sounds like you've had an epiphany. Its unlikely you'll be able to do everything you want to do as quickly as you'd like to (if you follow me), prioritise what YOUR requirements are and work towards them 1 step at a time, it took me a while to get to where I was reasonably happy although I always want to be better, whether that's more food/water/gear or knowledge. I also had to/have to convince Mrs Deeps that it was a good idea to spend some of our hard earned on things for 'just in case', there was a bit of resistance to start with but she's getting there.

Good luck with it mate, as you say it can be fun as well as a lifestyle, and remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. ;)

Welcome.

Similar story, ex service and thought I could easily cope in any situation. Wrong....... Started to prep for the smaller possibilities and have now got sufficient kit and stock to last us a couple of weeks if necessary. Its easy to get this bit of kit and that bit of kit which will slowly add up as far as the pocket is concerned. Food, water, shelter and comms is where I have started and all the advice and help from those on this site is fantastic. Good to have you on board and whatever you do, have fun doing it.
