Sewing Kit, What to put in it

OK anything i am missing?

Pack of mixed sized needles (Size 3-9)
Black & White nylon thread, the stuff you can't break with hands
Black & White thread, the stuff you can break with hands
Thimble
A dozen Nappy Pins, the kind that used to get used with terry nappies
20 mixed size safety pins
10 x Needle threaders (bad eyes you know)
Small Scissors (not got these yet)

So anything you think i'm missing?

Given that it's probably part of a larger bag, small scissors may be not needed, I have scissors on my pen knife and intend to have at least one pair for general use or in the first aid kit, as for anything missed I'd have to ask, what's your most likely sewing related problem which will need fixing? I would suspect broken or lost buttons, or issues with rucksacks, a few buttons, very strong thread, a heavy duty needle, and maybe a spare plastic clip thing for a rucksack, very few game changing mishaps which require sewing will involve a needle and thread alone

A few spare common size buttons and a bit of elastic maybe? I keep a few bits of sew on velcro in my kit, but I had some left over from a reversable jacket.

More thread than you think you'll need, a decent size tear will take a lot of sewing.

And an head torch, for sewing in low-light, if you don't normally carry one.

I once tore a 3x3" tear in my duffel coat on a nail. It took about 2 hours of sewing, I used all the black and blue thread in my own kit and 2 hotel kits, and as the light was so poor I was very happy to have a head-torch in my EDC.

A 3x3 tear would have taken me about five minutes (plus threading the needle) But I'll bet your was a LOT neater. My idea of a repair in a half inch blanket stich, it ain't neat but it holds it shut...... Thats if I havent got duct tape...

Well some guess work involved here as my reason for bugging out has not yet happened but i suspect it will be simple things like seams gone, ripped material etc.

Don't have torch yet but i will be buying the Petzl Pixa 3

Thats if I havent got duct tape...

Anyone tried that newer stuff called gorilla tape

Yes I bnought a roll of Gorilla tape for work/bodging, seems very sticky and tough, harder to tear than duct tape, it's actually hard to peel off the roll it's so sticky (and I got the small 1 inch roll) it looks good for bodging, I've been told it leaves sticky reisdue behind but I haven't used it for very long.

I keep a kit to patch up stuff with me at all times, but most of the time I've ended up pulling out a centre line from some 550 paracord and using a Hemline Repair Hand Sewing Needles Mattress/Carpet/Sail/Upholstery needle kit.

I have a little 'housewife' pouch I take with me on longer exercises/deployments.

It has the usual sewing kit but also a small goretex repair kit, bootlaces, velcro patches (sticky backed, but can still be sewn) and a Tesco own brand puncture repair kit (the size of a medium match box).

That and a roll of sniper tape means I can pretty much repair whatever is broken (even if for a short period of time)

May not be the most comprehensive set ever but 'it'll do'.

Back in my room, I have patches of material, more buttons, more laces etc...

It always amazed me that some guys didn't take a smally 'housewife' to sea. Although I was equally amazed how little (to me) essentials some of them took, there was always some cabbage like me to square them away and I think some just relied on this. Thread (black/navy blue and white COTTON for fire resistance), a couple of needles, some safety pins and spare buttons for shirts etc as a bare minimum. The amount of guys who didn't carry pens and torches used to do my head in too. Rant over, as you were.
