I'm about eight words per minute so far from experienced. I have learnt through a couple of apps on my phone - Morse Mania is pretty good.

Re: Morse Code
I used to use it for work (I was a communicator in the forces) and I used to love audible morse I thought it was a very personal way to communicate (you could sometimes tell who was sending it) but even going back to the late 80's/early 90's it was hardly used. Now I think the only morse used is 'flashing light' and certainly on submarines its very rare that its used at all and at the risk of being an old man, "its not like it was when I was a lad" I've seen guys who did the course 3 months before and not able to read it.
I think the only advantage it has is its very robust and less influenced by EMP etc, its certainly not a quick way to get a message across, even using opsigs (abbreviated groups of letters to convey info). Good luck learning it, its a curiosity now I guess but I'm sort of pleased with myself that I can do it although much slower than I used to.

Re: Morse Code
Morse is used in Latin American countries and heavily used in sub Saharan Africa and the Pacific islands. Its easy to learn and systems to handle it are cheap and easy to establish and run.
Verbal Morse (ie people saying dit and dah) in particular is utilised due to regional/tribal accents and pidgin languages.
