I'm not as into it as a lot of you guys with veg gardens and animals etc purely because of time (work etc) we do have a few months worth of food stocked though at all times. Similar to everyone else I don't talk to most about it because I got sick of trying to explain having a sensible approach to brain dead sheeple.
Have you looked into ways to keep your underfloor central heating and hot water operating during a prolonged power cut?
Yes lpg genny for power to operate the lpg boiler , I guess I could cobble together a buffer tank from the solar thermal panels , but untill the lpg goes dry(1800l tank) , I think I'll be ok for 6 months
Be Prepared.
Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.

Hot water is easy enough but under floor heating is quite tricky from wood burners, ideally you would use the log burner to heat a heat store then run the UFH and central heating from that
I just wondered if you had a system to keep the central heating running during power cuts.

One of my jobs, I work with two chaps who are so ignorant it is unreal. The cooler temperature sparked a conversation about heating. I mentioned that I have two multi fuel stoves.
They know I grow food and keep animals ( we are butchers for fs!) and cannot, really cannot, understand why I do this. They have no idea that I am a prepper. Probably too thick to have come across such a term

They really, really cannot get their heads around my lifestyle. " don't I have central heating?" " can't you afford the supermarket ?" "Don't you have gas ?"blah blah blah.

I called them a pair of ****s and cut them dead. Suffice to say they are both up to their necks in debt and have a dead end attitude.

Right now, I am sitting in front of my stove and have just read Nick Dutch post about power cuts in January. I rest my case!
i love this, i wont start, as many have said i really could, but i like to think of them more the "unenlightened" ;)

Instead I rely more and more on the name "Zombie." My dictionary describes zombies as "...a person who is or appears lifeless, apathetic, or completely unresponsive to their surroundings." That really seems to fit the bill a lot better !!
I'm not a fan of the 'sheeple' term myself, as Dangerman says, anything that makes things 'them and us' doesn't sit well with me although it doesn't bother me, its just a bit...cliquey. I get what people are meaning by it though.
Same here. I understand the implication that's meant, but I think it's patronising.

When i was at Primary school in rural Kent I was told be the head teacher never to be a sheep and blindly follow as it was better to be a goat and follow your own path wise advice that has stayed with me for fifty years.

Absolutely. But sheeple is an offshoot from sheep, not the same thing.

Never heard the addendum about the goat, I love that, by the way :D I'll happily describe myself as a goat :)

I don't mind either term, we all know what is meant by both sayings and that's the most important thing.

Sorry chaps only just caught up, yes I can run the heating in the event of a power cut using solar panels and batteries at a push, this would take a bit of faffing about connecting up etc etc but it can in theory be done if it was looking like a long outage. I too love the underfloor heating if I could start again in this house it would be everywhere (wet system) so much more efficient, I put the electric one in our ensuite and dressing room works well but it's expensive to run imo so not used much. I wouldn't be without the fires though so much so I had to have chimneys built etc to get them in  as the house had no fireplaces or anything when we bought it but during winter they're our primary source of heat, our wood is pretty much free and they heat the whole house so a no brainier really. The only time the heating comes on these days is early morning if the thermostat senses it to be low generally because someone forgot to load the fire up before bed

I have been quietly discussing the benefits of prepping to my husband, kids, mum and sister but would be reluctant to say much to people beyond that circle. Will speak to my brother shortly. These are all people who could help me and I would be willing to help. There are many other family and friends who it would be a complete waste of time mentioning anything to and would possibly get me publicly ridiculed which would only be a problem when/if something happened and they all came running.posting.php?mode=reply&f=14&t=12773#

Interestingly my daughter came home from school today saying that the kids were all discussing the events in Paris. Many of them are really worried and the chat on facebook around these parts has been unbelievable - so many predicting doomsday but knowing these people I doubt many of them would even think to buy in extra food or even the most basic supplies. Anyway, one of my daughter's friends said that we should all go to Asda and buy lots of food and water. I don't know if this smart kid came up with this herself or if her family have been discussing this/quietly prepping. My own daughter said to her friend she thinks that's a good idea whereas many of the kids just laughed and said what's the point in that. My daughter of course knows to keep quiet about our supplies. Maybe some people will start to catch on but there are plenty of sheeple who will blunder on regardless no doubt.
