Pleased i have candles!! putting together a power cut pack

Post by undomesticdiva »

Up in the windy hills of west county Durham we have had 2 power cuts so far, i have never been more pleased to have candles at hand, and two flasks that we filled with hot water as soon as we knew the storm was coming, sadly we are STILL without heating so sitting here in thermal socks, leggings, cargo pants, jumper , coat, hat and blanket!
I am looking into one of those tea-light terracotta pot heaters, just thinking of what else i can get to put together in a power cut pack? apart from the usual : candles lighter matches etc

I would definitely add a head torch, its the easiest way to navigate your home when doing tasks around the house after dark.

Don't muck about with those chemical hand heaters, get something that runs on lighter fuel like the whitbey ones http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jack-Pyke-Poc ... SwNphWYene They're great :D
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

It needs a minute in a microwave, but the heat from these lasts a long time: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microwaveable ... Tbz9y0lDmA

Do you have a little camping stove? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORTABLE-GAS- ... SwgQ9Vs5w-

I have a few dozen of those wheat bags I made myself  trouble is the microwave is no help in a power cut ;) and my hand warmer is great for outdoor activities too.

funny just remembered I put 4 1.5 Kg wheat bags all heated up in a supermarket cold bag all heated up last weekend as my daughter was suffering badly but still wanted to get out, and they worked a treat, but she borrowed my hand warmer too.

A corded phone. The lines will keep working after the power goes out as long as you're not using the uncorded freedom thingies. We keep a corded phone so my mother can ring and ask if we've blown away!

I splurged last year and bought a calor gas heater. And when we had four days of no/dirty power, it was worth its weight in gold. Usual safety rules apply.

And we've just had an LPG cooker put in, paying particular attention so we got one that we can light with matches in the event of power cuts. No more cooking on camping stoves!
