Retreats on the cheap?

Re: Retreats on the cheap?
As a rule build down not up. Nuclear bunkers are exempt from planning laws (but not building regs). So a very small plot of agro or woodland could easily conseal one or more 20x10 bunkers.
A shed or van in the middle of nowhere screams 'come and look inside' but a bunker can be totally hidden from view. People could walk right over it and never know it existed.
Cut and cover is the easiest way but a pain in woods due to roots. You can do the work yourself, hire a digger. Mix up concrete with a petrol powered mixer. the hard part is getting the materials to site.
If anyone aks what is being built, it is a sceptic tank. They won't ever want to go near it again. If the council ask (they won't unless you tell them), its a planning exempt bunker and you cant give them any details for obvious security reasons.
Cost depend on just how handy you are and what quality you want it to be. Ground water is an issue in most places, you don't want to get there to find soggy supplies or worse totally flooded.

The cleaver bit about a bunker in the woods is making 120cubic metres of soil "disappear" on the quiet, I gues you could dig another hole and bury it though

Socks sewn into your trouser legs, just pull the pins..... job done
The spoil is an issue and it depends how much land you have to lose it on. You are usually left with a pile which initially is almost twice as big as the hole you have just dug. The easiest way to get rid of it is to make an embankment or ridge along the edge of the land. Which will appear to be a boundary marker. It will grass over in less than a year. Or similar use it as path edges. An acre of land will swallow that much spoil without any trouble. Just dont leave it as a big pile, spread it as it comes out of the ground.
The other option is only dig half depth and use the spoil to cover the top half, but then you run the risk of a bunker shaped mound. So take account of the terrain. If there an existing embankment you are laughing, just extend it.
You can also take spoil away if you reall need to. (see above. socks in trousers

It's like one of those problems you get in higher maths. If one man can remove 20kgs of soil a day in one sock....how many days will it take him to dig a 3 sq mile hole usinf 5 socks? Bearing in mind he stops for a teabreak every 15 minutes and for every 20kg he takes out, his dog puts back in 5kg and they stop when it rains...

That is my plan - do a bunker style basement and put something like ecohab or similar on top of it. If the situation on top is really bad, like storms or zombies attacking from every direction then we would retreat to the basement. It will be fitted out just like a house, with beds, toilet, shower, etc. plus it would be used as a storage for all the preps.
At the moment I'm looking for a good location.

You know those old movies, where they had nuclear shelters? And they had to have something (sorry, not a techy type!) going to the outside, that would bring air in to be filtered, yes?
Well, I always thought, what if you were down there, and somebody blocked it up, or falling rubble blocked it up?
That put me off any kind of underground shelter.
