Foolish to do nothing

Post by Jan Smits »

Hi All,

Prepping has been on my radar a while, but just recently took the plunge. In the end I realised I'd feel pretty foolish if I didn't do anything at all. I'm in a highly urban environment, not even suburban, main risks that bother me are flooding/powercuts and I can count on unrest. I think 1 Month is all I should aim for - I can still change my mind on that later.

I've been doing a fair bit of research, inevitably ends up US focussed, so I signed up here to get more relevant tips.

Welcome to UK Preppers.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

That sounds good! And certainly, one month is a good initial goal, going at it too strongly can leave you exhausted and disillusioned. A month's worth of supplies is really important to me, as I tend to get long lasting viruses, and that's really the minimum amount I need. More power to your elbow :)

if one month is your goal , then think about every thing you go through in a month , food , soap powder or tabs , even loo roll .
worth remembering is take it slowly .
YES i walked away mid sentence , you were boring me to death and my survival instincts kick in .

Thanks for the welcome all.

Luckily I have a fair bit of stuff already from camping and walking holidays. Needed some updating so I spent around £40 and have cooking fuel, basic first aid, and around 4 days food with some backup - the water container on its' way should cover me for a good deal longer. I will definitely do a practice run, to see if I have what I really need, and to pay attention to what else I feel I need - I'm sure it makes sense to do some practical research before getting into serious investment.

I say one month as I figure by then someone will be breaking my door down, either to enforce evacuation, or an angry mob. I don't know, I only just started.

Absolutely. I question my ability to maintain it longer term though. Plenty to think about.

I think everybody questions their ability to survive for long periods if you didn't question yourself and thought to yourself ive got everything you would suddenly think a few days shit didn't think of that I needed I live in the north of England and right now to the west of me yorks flooding and leeds too and even though im on high ground and out of a flood risk area im still rechecking fuel in my vehicle stores my edc and bob equipment just in case also spare fuel and water sounds a little like overkill but I hate being underprepared .

Thing with floods is that even being near the zone can bring problems for water supply, electricity, sanitation and the rest.

In the long term stay dark stay quiet scenario, one major obstacle I have for bugging in is cabin fever. There's a limit to how long I'll want to keep at it before I'll want to be discovered.

Welcome to the site btw. You're right, there is a lot of great info and advice here, it's definitely helping me think things through - I've already progressed a lot in two short weeks.
