New here, first test!

Post by brownout »

Hi, new here but not to prepping, though not taking it too seriously. I stand by the plan of preparing for the most likely crisis situations. I keep a few days worth of water, a dry bag containing waterproofs, warm clothes, wind up torch/radio/ candles/ lighter etc. I rely heavily on knowledge rather than supplies being ex RAMC and NHS Paramedic.

So, today we have flooding and a power cut. Its Boxing day and my son is running a fever of 40. Wife is at her parents on the other side of the city and although we live at the top of a hill, the city is split in half! Not exactly SHTF, but certainly a test with mixed results.

In the first case, I found we were running low on Calpol. 2 kids means if one is ill, the other is not far behind. Call under 6 is 120mg Paracetamol in 5mg syrup, so 1/2 paracetamol tablet crumbled in some jelly works well for his dose. Thats sorted. Next up, torch at the top of the basement steps, get wind up out for the lad to play with, i get my head torch and start setting up candles before the sun goes down to make sure we're ready.

Next up, go and collect wife. My car rides quite high, and I know the air intake sits low so I disconnect it, block off the feed to the air box and and remove the lid of the box. not ideal, but prevents me sucking up flood water over 6 inches, which i will need to cross if I'm picking up the wife.

Job done, now i need to do dinner. Its being day, the kids want something nice. I suggest BBQ but the wind and rain suggests otherwise. I've no cash and the power is out so no cash machines. Then I remember my "secret" tattoo fund, I stick a few notes away in my safe from time to time. Now I have cash but no where to spend it. Also the fuel light in the car is on, and with no power the petrol station is out of action. i have a can of petrol in the garage for the lawn mower, 5l isn't much but i dunk it in the tank and its enough to get over the hill to the next town, where they have power, I fill up, get some take away pizza and then come home, read the kids a story, drink some christmas whiskey and live happily ever after.

Until next time.

So, some planning needs sorting. Flooding will continue to be an issue. At the very least i need to include cash in my emergency bag, keep the car filled up and stock more medication.

Apologies for the long tale, I'm looking forward to learning much from you guys, and hopefully this won't be like US forums where all conversations come down to firearms and war!

Hello brownout, welcome to the forum. There might be war on water, given the awful situation in the north, but that's it :)

You've got lots of medical skills, as a paramedic and ex RAMC, sounds great!

I can't quite work out if you're outlining a scenario or what actually happened yesterday? Still, an interesting tip about the jelly for a small child, I love that sort of re-purposing, its one of my favourite things about prepping :)

Hi and welcome.

There's nothing quite like a situation to give you a kick up the backside and to start prepping harder.

There's lots of info on the forum, take some time to have a mooch around. Any questions just ask.

hiya,
new to the site too but ive gotta say you were a lot more organised than some people you didn't panic and went through what you had organised and went through a plan no cash check you had a tattoo fund spare cash no diesel check you had some in the garage so it got you to the next village I know its simple to you and me but you had the basics and you dealt with the situation, ive spoken and talked to friends and relatives in York and leeds who hadn't even organised spare cash or any other edc stuff and hadn't thought the weather would get to them sometimes its just about common sense ................
