I'm New, Any Advise would be appreciated :)

Post by AS39 »

Hello,

This is my first post here and my first engagement with the prepper community.
you could day I've been prepping now for at least 2 years now, but have only just taken a more serious interest in it.

I'm a father to two boys under the age of 3, so it may well be my parental instinct kicking but i feel obligated to protect them in any life threatening scenario.

I had a few questions to ask regarding my preparation for a crisis.
clearly survival gear, camping equipment and defensive (hunting) instruments have a key part to play,
but what can i do in ways or preserving food? IE dried meat, cheese, wheat exetra, and how/ where should i store it?

depending on what scenario (if any) unfolds i think the best way to look at it is prepare to "bug out" like i was going on a camping trip for months on end. this way i know id have everything i would need and if ground 0 was to become dangerous i would already be prepared to leave.

if anyone can offer any advise i would greatly appreciate a response.

(one final question... i have explained to my wife, i am not bat sh*t crazy and do NOT want a life threatening scenario to unfold upon us, i just want to make sure we are Prepared IF anything was to happen - she's already seen a horde of air rifles, and various other worrying objects being packed into our loft, thankfully the camping equipment is easy to explain and the cold weather parkas, but i don't think she's going to be very happy if i start storing grains and meat in our attic... any suggestions as to where i can store the bulk of these supplies?)

Thanks for reading, All the best,

Welcome.first of all,SLOW DOWN. :D take everything a step at a time. Have a look around, use the search facility, ask questions in the relevant section.

Just to start.Do you have food for 3 days? Most folks do.build on that. You mention gtrains,( wheat?) Do you eat this stuff? If you don't, store what you do eat. That's the golkden rule. Store what you eat and eat what you store.

Got some water? Start with a few bottles from the shop.

You camp, so you have emergency cooking.

Got emergency lighting? You camp, you must have.

Got a battery FM radio? Get one to stay in touch if the power goes off.and batteries too.

Just this simple start puts you streets ahead, and you can refine it as time goes by without freaking out your family. You can start to justify it by looking at the displaced folks in the floods up North.
In three words I can sum up everything I have learned about life: It goes on.

Robert Frost.

Covid 19: After that level of weirdness ,any situation is certainly possible.

Hello AS39, welcome!

Just agreeing with jansman here :)

And adding a bit extra actually - first aid - cleaning cuts, sugar and salt solution against diahrrea (could never spell that, sorry), finding out extras about what you should and shouldn't do for babies and toddlers, when to ring 999, etc. Just the basics, just the mainstream stuff.

What if you and your wife were both ill? Do you have cold and flu stuff, and enough storecupboard food to last you without having to go out when you feel really ill? What if the kids were that ill?

The most common "shtf" is a house fire, sadly ... do you have an escape plan? How would you and your wife work together to get the children out?

As for the rest - there's tons of information on here, have a read through :)

Sit down watch the news with the Mrs. Then ask how she would cope with the ground floor full of water.....

2 hungry kids initially trapped upstairs in a flooded house.... No electric or heating

Then its 3am and the house catches fire how you getting out alive......

Or there's a chemical leak from a road tanker crash and your evacuated to a near by sports hall you got a bag handy to bug out there with? a big Rambo knife and cross bow won't help you in there and will probably get you locked up

Plan for the common threats BEFORE letting your imagination run away
If your roughing it, Your doing it wrong ;)

Lack of planning on your part doesn't make it an emergency on mine
