Good Morning fellow realists.

Post by Catweazle »

Hi all. I'm Catweazle, bred in Kent but for the last few years living and working in Pembrokeshire.

I realized some time ago that the future was not as bright as the past has been, on account of the UK living on borrowed money, so decided to cash in my stupidly over-priced house and land in Kent for a smallholding somewhere more remote. I feel much happier about the future now that I can be largely self-sufficient ( not that I am - just that I can be if I choose to ).

I've actually been "prepping" for nearly ten years now, it started when I bought woodland and a wood-burning heating system in 2006. I've always been a "Womble", collecting useful things that others consider scrap, and this works well on a smallholding.

I'm not averse to making big changes and would encourage others to take a chance and follow their dreams - you only live once.

Good luck.

Welcome. So I take it that you are preparing for economic problems?

That's my primary concern, but of course a lot of other problems will occur as the economy declines. I want to insulate myself from the fragile system as much as is practical, and put distance between myself and the millions of people crammed into cities. I have my eye on the longer term, when I retire in 20 years I doubt there will be enough in the state pot to pay me a pension, so if I can have a well-sorted smallholding and low-maintenance house I will be in a better position to look after myself and my wife.

A bonus is that I really like living here in Pembs - after living in the South East all my life this is literally a breath of fresh air.

Yes the increase in personal debt is a concern, and I don't know what the PTB will do about it, we will have to see. The economy is fragile and I have to say that I do envy anyone who can afford to have the set up to be able to live off the land :)
