Sizes over time

Post by Deeps »

A thought occurred to me when I was buying another pair of waterproof breeks, while I'm not prepping for the downfall of civilisation, do those who are thinking of prepping long term have clothes of different sizes for (most likely) 'shrinkage' over time etc. I get that having an extensive wardrobe of gore tex in all sizes would be on the pricey side but is this something that people take into consideration ? I don't myself and I'm just being nosey.

The most I've done like this is buy the cheapy reading glasses in different magnifications, Tesco's do them for a quid so I buy some when I see them but I see this as a very cheap option that I'll probably 'grow into'. I've got to the point where my arms are too short already so they'll end up getting used as I like to keep reading glasses about.

Any thoughts appreciated, do we have preppers on here who are thinking this long term ? If I let my inner prepper loose and I had the money its something I'd consider but its not something I could justify and Her Maj would have my nuts if she thought I was buying gear in all sorts of different sizes.

people do shrink as they get older , but we can also gain weight , so i see it as if they fit me now at 5.11 and 40 odd chest then they sort if fit when i start to shrink a bit on the baggy side but nothing a belt would`nt cure lol , think run down grey man ;)

I went with shrinking as a lot of us in the UK are on the 'sturdy' side, really it makes no odds whether its a size up or a size down (or 2). Its really a left field notion, as I said, I was getting an extra pair of waterproofs and ended up getting a 38' instead of a 40' and it got me thinking. If people are thinking of prepping for Armageddon then are they thinking of the possible difference in sizes long term. I know most of us on here aren't, just idle curiosity.

Clothing wise I always go slightly bigger than needed - at least to allow for size fluctuations.

I'd rather have too big/ baggy then too tight/ small!! Military clothing you can't go wrong with. I have military clothing 20 years old that still fits me and feels relatively fresh.

If you go on short rations for a few months everything is going to look baggy on everyone and you had better not still be trying to squeeze into your "skinny jeans" on the three or four month mark. People will be knocking on your door!

Clothes are easy to alter, using buttons, elastics and smocking, but shoes are not as easy, as you actually change your shoe size as well if you put on weight or loose some. And as we get older, feet tends to swell. So I would put my money on different sizes of shoes, rather than clothes.
