This is England , it rains - All i have ever had are leather Rigger boots .Warmer than wellies and more comfortable .Once bedded in i can walk all day in them without blisters or discomfort .Plus the steel toe caps give good protection and the deep rubber tread stops me sliding around in 8" of mud .
And most have a steel liner under foot to reduce any injuries from nails etc going through your foot when walking over rubble etc .
Plus as my trousers tuck into the boots , they stay out of the water / mud and away from any low brambles etc i may have to trample down as i clear a path . And with the new black style costing only £25 at B&Q , They are cheap as well .A single pair lasts me over a year , wearing them almost every day .With only such things as a broken glass or nails penetrating the side allowing water ingress .But this would happen to any boots .
Though i do pay a little more for the Dickies version as i find they are better quality and do last longer .
And when they get muddy , they can be washed with ease to bring them back to new again .
No laces , No polishing , No hassle .A plain and simple solution to our great British summer .

I wear 'worky' boots for walking the dogs for all the reasons you listed. I'm out for 4 hours or so a day in them and are perfect for bimbling around. I wouldn't want to wear them up and down hills etc though. This is in Scotland we get rain too.

Haix are a German brand of boot and I have a pair of mid-length patrol boots. They are like wearing trainers tbh with the added protection that a boot offer. They can be quite pricey, but they are Goretex and mine have lasted 2 years so far with much more life to go yet.

I am also a big fan of Altberg. Anyone who know boots, knows Altberg. I have a pair of British forces tan combat boots and they are amazing. Quite bulky but they don't compromise on protection, warmth and versatility.

Deeps - I am alright with my Rigger's .I do have an ingrowing toe nail problem though and the Riggers give my toesies room to spread out so i like wearing them at every opportunity , even to go shopping .
But as an alternative to expensive army style laced boots , Riggers have to come near the top of the list if you rate them on practicality and not poserability .
Even down to the simplicity of pulling them on quickly without a 1/4 mile of laces to tie before your ready for action .
Rigger boots rule in my world .
