My problem is the smell of the parafin oil. Makes me feel sick!
caldo low odour paraffin oil will not.

Thank you! I will have a try of that instead.

I saw these and thought they seemed good. Any problems with the wick? I read they
Often fall into the oil reserve.
Any idea what size wick they take ?
I've never had a problem of the wick falling into the tank and they take a 1/2 inch wick. I have only bought feuerhand wicks, can't say if the generic types will fit. HTH

Thanks for advice people. I'm going to try the feurhand ones as a cheaper than the Coleman and better quality than most of the crap on amazon option.

The biggest problem I've found with the various brands of non-pressurised paraffin wick lamps is operator error.... Or as I like to put it "other people messing with my lamps"

I used to take a few away to events to supply lighting in the 'In-Character' areas (rather then using electric lights that just look wrong and screw-up your night-vision), some people just didn't know how they work or basic troubleshooting.

The commonest errors were:
Putting it out by winding the wick all the way down, sometimes dropping it into the tank
Letting it smoke (wick too long) so the glass soots up
Turning the wick up too much because its getting dim due to the sooting
Running them dry, then burning the wick trying to relight
Knocking them over/down and leaving them
And my personal favorate. Deciding that its too bright for the 'ambience' and draping a piece of gauzy fabric over the top

I thought I'd add something to the thread, a UK based source of spares for paraffin pressure stoves and lamps.

I haven't tried them yet, but I'm going to order soon

I have a couple of old Tilley lamps i keep hanging up, just in case of power outages, i keep them fueled up and a bottle with meths for preheating them in the cleaning cupboard, got them off eBay, loads of spares knocking around and funnily enough, when i was a child we used to use a paraffin in the living room and i love the smell, brings back memories

Have uploaded a pic of one of my Tilley's, we take them camping.

I grew up with Paraffin lamps and heaters and still have a couple of those tall stovepipe types that you can stand a kettle on. They have seen me through a couple of difficult times over the years.

One thing you need to remember about Paraffin lamps/stoves is that they can cause considerable condensation if you don't have adequate ventilation.
