Hello all, just a quick note to contribute to the forum.
Whilst I'm not a huge fan of the "prepper" label, I guess it seems a mile away from the "survivalist" one of yesteryear. And yes, I've been of the "prepper" mindset pretty much all of the time since in one way or another!
I'm not preparing for any specific "end of days" style event but I am increasingly worried about the depressingly bad news of financial meltdown and conflicts that threaten our society. This means that my preparation is focused on self sufficiency and being able to maintain something approaching normality when and if the lights go out. I'm interested in building a skill set that could be bartered for other goods or services along with (eventually) having a home that can support my family without a need for wifi, mains electricity and water.
Happy to contribute, and hopefully learn from the rest of the community on here.

Welcome

Hi prepperpete, welcome to the forum. I too dislike the term "prepper." It seems to paint a picture in peoples minds of gun-toting, machete-wielding oddballs dressed head to toe in camo' gear hiding out in the woods; (thank you for that image BBC, C4, The Sun, Daily Mail, et cetera.....!!)
Of course, as many people on this forum will confirm, preppers are just ordinary folk who pay attention to what is going on in the world, are aware of the fragility and unpredictability of our present day society and realize that when things go wrong, when systems break down, it's no good sitting, waiting for help from governments; you have to be self-reliant.
I hope someone will come up with a more suitable label than "survivalist or prepper," but in the meantime just "Stay Alert" ..... after all, the world needs all the "Lerts" it can get

I consider myself to be awake and those that do nothing to be sleepers, sounds better in my head than prepper or sheeple
Behind every great man is an even greater woman. She carried you, raised you and made you who you are.

I'm not a fan of the term 'prepper' either but I'm not really a fan of pigeon holing in general although we all do it. In fairness though 'prepper' is probably a pretty good description, its just that its come to mean more to a lot of people (non preppers) than it actually means to us, bloody zombie apocalypses, getting us a bad name....again. Slightly left field I admit but if we're going to have a rising of the undead to fight against, why's it always zombies ? Vampires are way tougher (and cooler) so surely they're more likely to make a 'comeback'. Werewolves too, they're tougher than zombies but I digress.
