I have used this torch for 3 years at work as a paramedic. It has had a battering, dropped, body fluids and lost twice but seems tobjust keep working. Very powerful forbthe size and takes 3AAA batteries that I have changed a hamdful of times in 3 years. Aluminium construction and very durable. I can not recommend enough!!

Is this the one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adjustable-Flas ... B005FEGYCO
If so, it's got a nice output for the price, but i suppose you'd expect that with 3x AAA.
Cree LED is always nice too.

There's a number of torch geeks on here (myself included), if you're looking for a 'pocket power' torch the Cree's that use the 18650 batteries are amazing. A lot of them can use the 3 AAA's as well. There's also the Cree's that use the 14500 which is only a smidgin bigger than a AA but packs way more oomph. There are quite a few threads on torches, it seems we really really like torches.
A couple of links...

The 'number' batteries are rechargeable and you need a separate charger, like most things you get good and bad ones. Have a wee rummage on Amazon/Ebay if you're interested.

But seriously..... Did somone mention torch geeks?
Deeps?....how do I sign up as a torch geek? Had this for a couple of years, deeps has put up a link to an incredibly cheap one... I can't recomend them enough I have a few but this is my EDC along with a spare 3.7v surefire battery, although in a pinch will work adequately on an AA, it's tiny lightweight fits alongside the spare battery in a little belt pouch, gives a 2 metre circle of day light 2 metres from you or zoom in brightly as a searchlight a longggggg way from you...strobe is useful to draw attention and offers defensive possibilities alongside the solid aluminium toothed body
Only drawback would be the limited burn time...however....I use a headtorch for any protracted light requirements so not an issue for me

Re: Powerful cheap torch
I'm not a torch geek - but could be tempted to become one! My latest purchase is a Convoy S2+. This is powered by a single 18650 cell, offers 3 brightness modes, and feels really nice and solid.
