Are ferro rods fragile?

I've never had a problem with the ones you get with a handle thingy, had one of those for years, but it's glued? into a support housing sort of thing, the other one I have is fastened to magneisum so both are solid, I was thinking about the bare rods, and you've confirmed my thoughts.

Another fail.... this time a 'Treckmates' ferro rod.. The rod cam out of the plastic end holder.
Nice rod - soft - that produces a good strike.

Your the second person I've heard that from, maybe a dodgy batch?
