I just had an awful experience with an infected sore someone in the family picked and it became septic.
Let me tell you that no matter what you have in the first aid it will run out and quick.
after washing crepe bandages a few times they are just finished, what you really want is to knit your own, 6 of those and you are in a good position i can tell you, 4 ply cotton or craft cotton and small no 2 size needles, 16 sts and knit every row depending on how you knit 3 inches wide and 4 feet long and there you have a more permanant solution, and diabetic ulcer care dressings.
I will never be in that position again i can tell you

Re: Infected wound
You can get iodine dressings from a pharmacist. They don't like selling them unfortunately but if you tell them they are for a relative who has a wound and recommended by District Nurse you can get some

Re: Infected wound
I don't care who likes or not i am going to stock up it is not to take the doctor away as you would still need anti biotics, but that is just never going to happen to me again.
Thanks i will look into iodine, the best ones seem to be ulcer care.

Re: Infected wound
That's a really good point about having enough stock in to change the dressing frequently enough. Never occurred to me to knit a bandage! 4 ply on no 2, 16 stitches. Me like.
I have a couple of bottles of wound-oriented iodine, which I had to order in from the nearest Lloyds Pharmacy - looking online now, the only iodine is via prescription. I was surprised to see quite a few articles discussing the pros and cons of using it - I thought it was an unqualified pro, but I see I shall have to do more research. There's iodine of various sorts on Amazon, but not even Chemist Direct has any tincture in stock right now.
Anyway ... bandages. Good call.

Re: Infected wound
I have done some bandages to put away and i am just thinking of expanding on that by making some covers like the adjustable maybe strapped ones that boots have, not for sprains but for an expansion on the bandages like covers that are washable. maybe can be used as bandages like a musim washable piece incase there is an injury
Re: Infected wound
I get Iodine from the local independent Chemists. Boots tell lies! Ask them and they say it's banned, it's not, they just no longer want to stock small amounts of unpopular stuff. I tried getting some Calamine lotion in Boots last year they don't sell that either.
I also keep some Gentian Violet and Hydrogen Peroxide, again both from the independent chemists.
Just as an aside. If you're having trouble getting any of the older wound treatments, try a Feed Merchants. They have allsorts of goodies in the veterinary section!

Thanks i will have a look, i know boots have recently told me they can no longer get simple stuff such as ex lax chocolate and kaeolin liguid and i just cannot see why it is banned.
Re: Infected wound
It's not. I think it's just the big chain pharmacies are not stocking these type of products as they don't make money. Kaolin is available from Wilkos of all places in both liquid and tablet form.cornerstone wrote:Brambles wrote:I get Iodine from the local independent Chemists. Boots tell lies!
